Defense Against New Primaris Marines?

Recommended Posts

Well, I think by now we all have found the datasheets for the new Primaris Marines. Im not so worried about Chaos but those deep striking Autocannons might pose a bit of a speed bump.

I don't really see the problem with the autocannons. The infiltrators that autowound with a 6 on the to-hit are maybe more a threat. Or the snipers with D3 damage that can target our precious Vexilla guys.

None of them are really a threat to a Custodes force. 6s auto wounding is still only one in 6 shots and it’s still very likely whatever they wound will save it because they have 0AP. Their scramblers are a bigger issue if you’re deep striking though. The big advantage of infiltrators is they let you get up the board quickly and get close to the enemy but that’s exactly where Custodes want them.

The snipers can be safely ignored imo as they’re very unlikely to actually kill a character, especially in a reasonable time frame. Math-hammer wise they’ll take a full 5 turns to kill a space marine captain, let alone a Custodes character. For reference a squad of 3 firing executioner rounds would inflict 0.36 unsaved wounds against a vexilla bearer, firing Mortis rounds it’s 0.27.

The flying autocannons might kill one or two guardians if they get lucky but they’re just as easy to kill as regular marines so if they’re proving a problem a jetbike should be able to clear them out pretty easilyz

My take is that they are good at board control, being that they infiltrate from the start of the game and they are reasonably tough enough to be hard to shift off of an objective. But, I think vertus praetors and shield captains can close the distance. Some of their deepstrike denial shenanigans might interrupt a custodes deepstrike, but I don't know if that'll cost you the game.

They aren't that striking to me in the shooting phase or fight phase. The librarian, lieutenants, and captain will help synergize, but how much damage do they really do? I mean I think they'd have tactical advantages to deploying 10 man squads, but that is almost certainly going to cost a lot of points. If an army goes all in on this type of infiltrating army, where are all their heavy hitters? An army of tactical marines, though neat looking, doesn't seem able to handle a lot of enemies. And characters buffing boltguns is arguably not the best choice.

But, the big question I have is on points. Custodes are elite. These marines may likely fall into the elite, but not quite custodes elite category. Yet, I still wonder about stratagems too...

From a Custodes perspective:

As it stands right now, being closer to us, only helps us. You want to make the distance to me smaller? Great, I love charging turn 1.

As far as Autocannons, sure they can be annoying, but there is far worse out there.
