Successful Units?

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone,

Unfortunately I haven't had a chance to get a game in yet with my GSC (real life always gets in the way)

So now that the codex has been out and people have (hopefully) managed to get some games in I was looking to understand what performed well on the tabletop and what perhaps didn't live up to expectations.

It's one thing to go through the codex and see amazing units / combos, but its a totally different beast in reality.

Be great to have the communities feedback on what units they will always take in a list, units that are the "workhorse" but won't necessarily bring to every game, and then those units that wont see the table much for whatever reason.

For me it's now the Patriarch. I never used to take it as it was 150 points and too expensive without relics or traits. Now it's my Star unit that does absolute work every time. I give him the +1S and +1A Trait and the +1S, +1A, +1T relic and let him eat whatever I need him to. I had a game against a Knight+Custodes list the other day, stripped the Warden(?) knight to 18 wounds with mining lasers first turn, got my Patriarch into it second turn with Might from beyond and the no over-watch power. I then proceeded to wound with 7 attacks, 6 at 6s, while that is super lucky it was still incredible to see him do that. He then just cleared the rest of the board minus some armigers which the neophytes dealt with.

Another unit for me is the Sanctus. I never thought that a strength 4, AP-1 sniper rifle would actually do much but out of the 2 psykers I've gone against, he's perils of warped both first turn. Again super lucky I know but it really shows what these guys can do when they perform at maximum

Both are currently autotakes alongside Acolyte with Standard and Magi

This is as I thought. The Sanctus just seems so good for 60pts with the A perfect Ambush strategem costing 0CP. Im looking at giving him the relic sniper which should do some great things.

Patriarch too on paper seems to be one of our top units and from what i've seen does very well on the table.

Anything in your list you have used but just didnt pull its weight? Im looking forward to getting my Atalan Jackals on the table, but have a feeling I may be disappointed

The relic sniper means that he's getting the mortal wounds on a 4 to wound instead of a 6, which is so good vs psykers because even if they save the shot itself they still take a mortal wound, triggering the perils.

I've only managed one game with Jackals and the ridgerunner and with a alphas and all mining lasers they were the bomb, even managed to clobber down some custodes with improved weapons and a power axe.

The only things that seem good on paper but die before they get there are Acoyltes. Being toughness 3 with no invuln hurts a lot when trying to charge. You can offset slightly with a standard bearer but even then that's a stretch. Once they get in they shred, but it's the getting in that they struggle with.

In a vaccum:

Patriarch

Primus

Magus

(Above better together)

Clamavus

Iconward

Kellermorph

Sanctus

Jackals & HWT to fill out brigade

Acolytes

Brood brothers

I've not found neophytes so useful

Abberants

Allies

Guard Psykers

Tempestor Prime

Genestealers

Biovores
