cravgar
Hi guys, I’m more of a collector than player but have mainly collected SW over the years. I’m a few hundred £ invested but I get the enjoyment modelling etc so playing is a second BUT I’m a competitive person so when I do play I want to win and don’t really like loosing :-) My question is more about an opinion people may have, ive considered getting a different army potentially UM or DW or maybe something different like grey knights or something else all together. My primary foe plays Astra millitarum. Would I find more success potentially but coming away from my beloved wolves and taking up something like UM? What I don’t want to do is invest a load more ££ to get the same problems etc Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/354442-contemplating-an-army-change/ Share on other sites
Captain Idaho
Marines can be reasonably competitive but a pure Marines force isn't quite top tier. It depends on the level of competitiveness you're aiming at in that regard. I'm a player who enjoys a mix - fairly competitive but a healthy sprinkling of theme and units I enjoy. The beta Bolters rule is a must when regarding the following advice. - The Victrix Guard Specialist Detachment can combine with cheap Storm Shields to provide us with a substantially competitive element. - Fire support from cheaper Centurions can also assist us greatly especially if you have a few other units to add some target saturation. - Tigurius is the best competitive choice in the Codex, I'd say even more so than Guilliman simply because he's so cheap and the utility he brings to boost up our units is so high. Making a Vehicle toughness 8 or 9 will give you a warm feeling, especially if you make said vehicle -1 to hit. - Guilliman is a great force multiplier. Those Centurions I mentioned earlier? When they reroll hits and wounds they'll be renamed the Red Mist for what they do to the enemy. - Ironclads with Hurricane Bolters and Chainfists are underrated I feel. A solid unit now especially boosted by Tigurius and a Techmarine. I use a bit of target saturation with a Contemptor (moves so fast) and find folk don't fire at the T8 model when the Contemptor is running at them. - Dreadnoughts with Lascannon and Missile Launchers will make you smile at the cheapness of them and their stats lend well to target saturation of the other things I mentioned above. Those are the stand outs in my eyes compared to SW. Regarding DW you'll have more anti tank and thus overcome their massive weakness. Ultimately the lists you build with pure Marines won't be as effective as some of the tournament soup we see, but you should still have a fighting chance against many an opponent. ONDIG
EZ fix .Make a 1000pt DW Or Ultra list to ally w/ 1000pts of your Wolves....Soups on! Saves the xpence of an entire New army and lets you play a 2000pt game until you choose to upgrade your New faction. Competitvely (4Marines ) DW is an excellent option. UM are great also(i guess) for all of the reasons listed above but dont forget Bltr scouts / scoutbikes sprinkle in a lil salt (Telion) and well 1000pts of scouts can make a pretty sweet screen. Captain Idaho
Yeah cheap Scouts boost the competitiveness of Marines quite a lot. Forgot to mention that. cravgar
Great thanks guys I’ll have a good think. The wolves are fun but I feel you need to be very good at the game to play them well and as a noob that makes things tough :-) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/354442-contemplating-an-army-change/#findComment-5273658 Share on other sites
Closet Skeleton
If Space Wolves aren't cracking it for you then I doubt another Adeptus Astartes faction is going to help. I'd recommend keeping your Space Wolves as your Space Marine army and doing a non-Space Marine army. Captain Idaho
Also... there's little as impressive as a fully painted Ultramarines army. ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/354442-contemplating-an-army-change/#findComment-5273695 Share on other sites
Jolemai
Also... there's little as impressive as a fully painted Ultramarines army. ;) A certain third edition Codex image comes to mind... Jorin Helm-splitter
If Space Wolves aren't cracking it for you then I doubt another Adeptus Astartes faction is going to help. I'd recommend keeping your Space Wolves as your Space Marine army and doing a non-Space Marine army. I tend to agree with this, I think my first step would be posting in wolves sub forum and see if they have some pointers for you. Then look at all your options. I run a primaris wolf army, and if I'm playing in a more competitive setting I bring allies (right now knights, but I'm probably going to start taking advantage of the new assasain rules). I do think ultramarines are stronger but its really hard to make one codex armies work in this edition. cravgar
i'm going off 90% unknown with the wolves.. like i said I'm a noob, most of my enjoyment has been M&P. I've been discussing in there to about the models i have at my disposal. I was just thinking that off all the SM options that they are maybe not the best vs something like AM as they really need to get into their CC. And before I buy more models to actually start fielding an army i figured i should check out my options and UM looked like a possible better one but others are sparking interest to like DW or GK. I may chose a completely different 3rd army so that between me and my friend we have 3 different to play. local clubs tend to play on nights where im travelling back home from a long day out so we really do the odd casual game etc. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/354442-contemplating-an-army-change/#findComment-5273732 Share on other sites
