Mendi Warrior
Thanks, they have quite a few lion head designs. There are shields as well. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/354601-legio-astorum-walks/page/9/#findComment-5500420 Share on other sites

Dark Bjoern
I like to build terrain and Mendi Warrior´s Mountain Fortress was a huge inspiration. I copied some elements of his fortress (they seems to be STC ) but i will also add some of my own ideas. http://hosting.photobucket.com/images/x120/DarkBjoern/Bergfestung%20WIP%2001.JPGhttp://hosting.photobucket.com/images/x120/DarkBjoern/Bergfestung%20WIP%2002.JPGhttp://hosting.photobucket.com/images/x120/DarkBjoern/Bergfestung%20WIP%2003.JPGhttp://hosting.photobucket.com/images/x120/DarkBjoern/Bergfestung%20WIP%2004.JPGhttp://hosting.photobucket.com/images/x120/DarkBjoern/Bergfestung%20WIP%2005.JPGhttp://hosting.photobucket.com/images/x120/DarkBjoern/Bergfestung%20WIP%2006.JPGhttp://hosting.photobucket.com/images/x120/DarkBjoern/Bergfestung%20WIP%2007.JPGhttp://hosting.photobucket.com/images/x120/DarkBjoern/Bergfestung%20WIP%2008.JPG Still alot to do! Dark Bjoern
That round terrain bit as a turret so to speak looks really cool! The industrial terrain makes for great little detail bits. That will be the communication/command tower. A bigger satelite dish and more antennas and some more details. And yes, the manufactorum box is awesome for this project. I have some more parts reserved for this project! Mendi Warrior
Excellent! I love it! I particularly like the massive buttresses topped with kataphron breachers armour, that is an excellent choice. I also like the arch before the drawbridge. Are you planning on having a functioning one? And the communication tower is wonderful, a larger dish is a must. And I love the stairs as well. The manufactorum box has indeed many interesting bits. Eager to see the next steps. One thing I would do differently if I were to build mine again (or build another one) is that I would hit the insulation foamboard with a layer of dark paint before covering it with bark so that it doesn't show the lighter colour of the insulation foamboard in some places too difficult to access with a brush. Thanks alot, i´m glad you lke it. I have so many ideas for more details ( and the bits for them put aside). Unfortunatly i need new glue to go ahead. I want a landing pad, a void shield generator and two or three AA laser batteries. And no, i will glue the drawbridge into position. The foamboard is indeed a problem. I have to seal it with some thinned glue before priming it. The solvent in the primer would destroy the foamboard. I tried it with a small piece and there was not much left of it after priming. But at all there will be not much visible of it. Mendi Warrior
Cool ideas, eager to see the results! New glue is also a concern of mine, I'm running very low at the moment. For the foamboard, I used acrylic paint, leftovers from my home refurbishment work, and a large heavy brush (not a model painting one). Ideally I should have put the paint before hot gluing the bark. After that step, I spray painted Chaos Black with no visible melting to report. I then used a brush to touch up the areas still showing the yellow insulation board, typically crevices and gaps between the "rocks". An alternative I use on flat surfaces is to glue a piece of cardboard to the insulation foamboard before spray painting. This can help as well. But much less for a rocky mountain of course. Dark Bjoern
I need some opinion. I want my mountain fortress void shielded but i don´t know what to do. Should i use an AT void shield generator or should i build one 40k style? https://www.games-workshop.com/de-DE/Void-shield-Generator-2016 Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/354601-legio-astorum-walks/page/9/#findComment-5508539 Share on other sites
noigrim
It scales pretty well albeit I don't like the design Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/354601-legio-astorum-walks/page/9/#findComment-5508593 Share on other sites
Mendi Warrior
That is an excellent question. The titan's void shield generators are probably a bit small for the fortress, the 40K one would probably scale better but as noigrim I am not a big fan of its design. I would probably go for something modular that can also be used as a standalone piece, with an intermediate design, using some bits from the Manufactorum kit. Have a look on google, there are a few 40k scratch-built examples out there. Does it need to be 1 central generator or a multitude of smaller overlapping ones? Fajita Fan
A version of that shield generator is on Thingiverse somewhere to 3d print. I remember when that kit came out in resin, cost a ton, sold out immediately, and years later they made a plastic version. From what I heard the resin version had some casting issues. I think the little ball on four posts in the industrial terrain kit is a fine shield generator, maybe a few of those scattered around hooked up to dynamos via some wire? Dark Bjoern
So now i´ve 5 options for the VSG 1) https://www.games-workshop.com/de-DE/Void-shield-Generator-2016 a copy of the GW design 2) http://hosting.photobucket.com/images/x120/DarkBjoern/Bergfestung%20WIP%2009.JPG Using the AT one 3) http://hosting.photobucket.com/images/x120/DarkBjoern/Bergfestung%20WIP%2011.JPG Using the "water tank" 4) http://hosting.photobucket.com/images/x120/DarkBjoern/Bergfestung%20WIP%2010.JPG try building a combination of 2 and 3 5) http://hosting.photobucket.com/images/x120/DarkBjoern/Bergfestung%20WIP%2012.JPG or finally building a "Hoth" style one But not to forget space is limited. Mendi Warrior
I had a dream ... no kidding, I woke up and it was like "hey, that could be another alternative". Here is the idea: the actual generator, the big one, is hidden deep inside the mountain, then there are pylons at various points of the fortress, each one acting as a shield relay. The pylons don't all need to be on top of the fortress, they can be on walls, parallel to the ground. Think of The Phantom Menace battle of Naboo when the Gungan army raise shields, there are several generators/relays. To model this, Warlord void shields (or proxies) on top of medium-sized connectors (or alternate pylons), 4 together. So, more food for thoughts Now, seeing your 5 alternatives, maybe combining designs 2 and 3 together in a similar way to the original 40K design can be achievable. You would have the "battlefield assets" void generator in the center, maybe on the bunker underside, surrounded by 4 elevated "water tanks". Fajita Fan
Think of The Phantom Menace battle of Naboo when the Gungan army raise shields I try not to. The pod racing video game was the only decent thing to come from those abominations - they're one of the reasons I don't want Hollywood touching our grimdark universe. Much too big. Well how about that round crane thingy acting as the vertical part with a few of the water towers on top? It would have a smaller footprint while having some height to create a bubble. I actually 3d printed and painted the Hoth shield generators which are scaled about 4" by 2", is that too big? I like them because they can act as plasma relays (or something) at 40k scale. Also there's a fan bit that has two horizontal connectors that can go to the Hoth-style generators on either side, the water tower can go between them.
