Vigilus Ablaze Detachments

I honestly don't get why people always instantly tend towards building a gunline just because of the alpha legion/raven guard trait. Sure it's nice for a gunline, but it also helps to get more models into melee as the only time you should be outside of the trait range is the turn you attempt to charge something.

The thing about Chaos that has perturbed me in 8th Edition so far is how most of our abilities are focused on close combat but my Alpha Legion wants to play the gunline game. Warpflame Strike, DTTFE, all but one if the generic Chaos Warlord Traits, all melee-oriented.

Now, the Devastation Battery and Noctilith Crown help gunlines, and I'm for sure to focus on those with Havocs and Helbrutes to start, but the Raptor Host really has my imagination right now. Between the Host's Warlord trait and Arkos, that's a +3 to charge rolls on the drop which makes landing a Warpflame Strike charge pretty easy...

I agree, it's just making those Warp Talons sting a bit more.

The thing about your gunline is it's hard to get rid of, and it always stings to be on the receiving end. Sometimes Warp Talons just tickle a bit then go away. :)

I built hybrid lists with Berzerkers and such when FO was anywhere outside if 9"...now that it's a 9" move, the utility is more for pushing out your screen or propositioning Troops in cover/on an objective.

Here's what gets me about the new detachments... they are all good. Not great, but good enough so that no single one is clearly dominant.

I can see myself using Raptors, I can see myself using Possessed, I can see myself using Daemon engines, I can see myself doing stuff with Cultists, I can see myself bringing Terminators again, I can see myself going full Khorne, I can see myself screwing with Renegades. Just processing the options will take time, all I know is my lists and playstyle just changed. I used to turtle up around Abaddon and fight from a distance, that doesn't seem like the best option anymore.

So this release scratches that itch of curiosity and experimentation. Good for GW, this will definitely sell some models.

However, at some level, it feels like the designers are just stirring the pot. We're seeing rules that make some units playable again and we're seeing some standout HQs. What we're not seeing is anything that really changes the situation for Chaos, bringing them to the level where they can really compete with Guard / Eldar / Imperial Knights lists. I have this feeling all that's really happened is we've sweetened our position in the second-tier with shiny new toys, there may not be an optimal, competitive build waiting to be discovered.

Hate to think that way. After some quality time with the leaks, here's what I'm going to focus on first (and why) as I figure out what to do with all this.

- The Lord Dischordant. A Daemon Engine HQ who halves damage and has built-in horde resistance belongs in most armies.

- Raptors. At about 100 points per squad, a Host Raptoral detachment will be my defense against Assassins and serve as objective grabbers.

- Allied Daemons. Along with the new Shrine, Bloodletter Bombs (and maybe even a Thirster) are going to be my deep striking heavy Infantry. I can see myself dropping 60 'Letters conga-lined back to the Shrine to wipe out threats in the middle of the board.

- Black Legion Terminators with combi-bolters and chainaxes. Not for the Bringers of Despair gimmick, they are just priced right. 2 wounds, great save, 4 shots with combi-bolters, excellent shock troops.

- Rhinos with double combi-bolters packed with CSMs, Chosen or Havocs. 8 shots per turn is good for the vehicle.

I don't think this leads to a competitive list, I do think it leads to an understanding of what else needs to be there.

I like these specialist detachments for structuring a list (or painting project), but wish there was one more geared towards the basic CSM unit. I supposed that would somewhat undercut the 'Specialist' aspect, but cultists got one, so... yeah.

Agreed I’m definitely using it to divide all my projects into manageable chunks weather anything ever seems a table!
