War Angel
Picked up my knight Titan today to show my son (so glad he’s into robots) and I noticed a pretty severe collection of dust. Is there any way to protect from this without having to box the models up, and what’s the best way to remove the dust. Ranulf
The Ikea Detolf. Google it, Youtube it, see what it's capable of. With some minor DIY modification it can be made dust proof. -Ran Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/354870-what-do-you-do-about-dust-buildup/#findComment-5286325 Share on other sites
Guzzlrr
I put my big models in boxes with foam peanuts If there is a build up use a dry tank brush to clean that's what I do lol Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/354870-what-do-you-do-about-dust-buildup/#findComment-5286326 Share on other sites
Aspecti
I have a big, soft brush with long bristles just for dusting models :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/354870-what-do-you-do-about-dust-buildup/#findComment-5286331 Share on other sites
Subtle Discord
I agree with the Ikea Detolf glass display case; I haven't got one yet but it will be the case I use once the time is right. As for removing the dust I use a good quality 2" natural hair paint brush; as in the kind you'd use for painting walls in a room. The natural hairs taper down to very fine points that are delicate enough to be safe aggressively brushing away dust from even the smallest nooks and crannies, all while being genital enough that it won't harm the paint job, even if it's in progress and not varnished yet. Been using the same brush for over 10 years and I consider it one of my most useful simlple tools in my collection. I hate dust but it's unavoidable, so this simple tool helps me keep my sanity over the years. That's been an unfortunate issue that seems to keep cropping up, more than a few collector types on the internet have gotten a glassy surprise. Truth be told that's why I prefer the Kallax shelves. Sure it's a little harder to light, but there's practically no weight limit and all the flat open space is great for adding decoration. As for dust, I like keeping a can of compressed air around, I've also used an airbrush in a pinch. Interrogator Stobz
I've used a soft house painting brush for decades, although these days lots of minis like Mechanicus have pretty thin bits, you'd need to be careful or move into the future and get an brush or similar. :P Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/354870-what-do-you-do-about-dust-buildup/#findComment-5287050 Share on other sites
MaliGn
Make-up brushes work well for this purpose, as they tend to be mega soft. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/354870-what-do-you-do-about-dust-buildup/#findComment-5287568 Share on other sites
Verux
I was prepared to buy 3 detolfs. Now I am uncertain. Has the quality really been that bad lately? Ranulf
First I've heard about the Detolf exploding - though Google is showing me a few incidents. I guess there is always a chance of receiving a product with a flaw, especially with tempered glass. Compound that with mistakes made during assembly (putting a load on the glass by bending it to fit the groves of the base/top) and problems will arise. I've had mine for two years without any issues. -Ran Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/354870-what-do-you-do-about-dust-buildup/#findComment-5288346 Share on other sites
Bryan Blaire
I have Besta shelves with glass doors and lighting inside - never had problems with those.
