Need Competitive List Building Advice

Inquisitor Trinity

Recommended Posts

Lost a couple games so I'm looking for some competitive list building advice. You could suggest a list, give me advice on what units to take or some unit reviews or strategies. Basically any advice to help me build a competitive list. Below is everything in my collection currently. Thanks in advance!

Looks like you might have enough for 2 Deathwatch Battalions and an allied Inquisitor in an Aux. Put the Inquisitor and some Vets in the Corvus.

For your mixed Intercessor and Veteran units, the below link has some good sample builds you can use:

https://1d4chan.org/wiki/Warhammer_40,000/Tactics/Deathwatch(8E)#Troops

DW will eventually get access to the Vanguard troops in a mixed Infiltrator unit, just not yet, so hold off on them for the time being.

Give your smash captain the Beacon Angelis and your Watch Master can be Warlord.

So I personally am not a big fan of running mono deathwatch, while you will hear people say that DW are the best marines, thats only semi true, as it is very specifically applied to our troops.  DW struggle heavily vs any meta including a lot of vehicles.  They only really have a few option deepstriking melta/av, hellblasters, razorbacks or dreads, none of those are particularly cost effective, and all of those are easily dealt with by even medium caliber weaponry.  So generally speaking as a pure DW army you are very match up dependent.  You will generally crush people relying on monsters or horde, but vs something like knights or a tank list by guard you will be swatted aside with ease.  A quick note though, none of your models from shadowspear can be used as deathwatch currently.

A break down of what you have should help illustrate this point, your only REAL av here is 5 hellblasters, the 3 inceptors (if plasma) 5 combi meltas, a razorback with twin las cannon, and a smash captain.  In a pinch you could count the corvus and the frag cannons, but lets be honest if you are fielding frags for AV work you could be a lot more cost effective with missiles or something.  Other than that you are relying on strategems to help.  Also one of the things vets have goin for them is SS/SB and you have 0 of those so you have no 3++ saves which is going to hurt the performance of your vet squads.  Even Squads being run on the cheap should have a couple guys with bolt guns/SSs IMHO.  You can sort of work around it with the SS VVs but just makes your life tougher here.  I don't say this stuff to beat you up over the army I am just outlining part of why you are probably having problems.  For the record I don't think you need SS/SB vets i actually think they are going to nerf the in some way.  I do think though you should consider some boltgun/SS vets for fodder to protect your important guys like frags or combi meltas.  I don't get the feeling you are looking at ideas to add to your army though as you have a good amount of DW already.  So here goes for my suggestion on how to use what you got.

I just used powerswords as place holders for which ever power weapon you gave them.  Can cut a vet from the frag squad to let the watch master ride if you want and save some points cutting artemis as well with a bit of messing with the list you can find room to fit in the apothecary if you want to baby sit your intercessors.

General use suggestions of that would be artemis and frag squad in the corvus, use 3 deepstrikes on the stormbolter squad, combi melta squad, and the intercessor/hellblaster kill team.  The 2 5 man intercessors want to be set somewhere they hopefully don't have to move, and objective or some point of cover with good vision lines, take advantage of the potential 36" 10 shots.  Take advantage of the ability to advance and still shoot the auto hits when jumping out of the corvus should be able to reliably remove screens or priority targets depending on what is needed for the game.  Watch master I would use to give rerolls to your twin las cannon and intercessors.  Also would save artemis' stasis bomb for a vehicle or some other priority target.  Don't forget to use the tempest shots on vehicles as well.  Also don't forget to use your +1 to wound strategems for your big shots like your hellblasters or combimeltas.  In a pinch even your stormbolter team can use it to help you down a vehicle.  The VV team goes with your smash captain and jump chaplain just find something to punch, and make sure you keep them out of LoS if possible.   With your deepstrikers make sure you plan the movements of your models carefully so they can take advantage of one of your 2 captains or your watchmasters reroll auras.  Could also shove an angelis beacon on your jump captain or chaplain then you can start with one of your DS squads of your choosing on the table out of LoS of your opponent let the jump pack guy move+advance then warp the squad forward into rapid fire range.  The storm bolter squad is probably the best candidate for this.  I am not sure this is a GOOD list but it should be serviceable depending on your meta.

Good luck to you.

Thanks for the advice guys. I'm surprised that no one pushed for the leviathan dread. I would've thought that would be a must have. I also forgot to say i have 1 of each assassin and that i haven't built 5 of the stormbolter + chainsword marines so i can build them with stormshields and stormbolters. The inceptors are Dark Imperium ones so they only have the bolter option and not the plasma. As soon as the shadowspear vanguard get deathwatch rules (and a hefty point drop) i think i'll replace the intercessors with infiltrators and the xenophase captain or chaplain with a phobos captain. All that awesome omni scrambles and concealed positions. Give the phobos captain the beacon angelis as well.

I've put a list together based on everyone's advice. Let me know what you think :)

I left 85 reinforcement points to use the "Operative Requisition Sanctioned" strategem at the start of the game to get any of the 4 assassins.

Please let me know what you think of this updated list! Have a great evening!

I agree that including the Leviathan is a good idea, teleport that sucker and watch his hordes melt. The Grav Flux Bombards would also do really well against a Knight if you could get a Null Zone JP librarian in range. As vehicles and knights are deathwatch's main weakness, having a few counters will be worthwhile.

Something I came up with based on what you have:

Rhino [4 PL, 74pts]: 2x Storm Bolter

++ Total: [126 PL, -1CP, 1973pts] ++

Suggested strategy:

- Spend CPs to deep strike the Intercessor/Hellblaster and Stormbolter/frag cannon Vet units.

- Combat squad the Storm bolter and VV unit; put the shotgun and storm bolter units in the rhino

- Deploy the Smash Captain and VV "body guard" unit on the table; rush up the field with the rhino or on a weak flank (beacon an intercessor unit after the move)

- Slowly advance the Primaris guys forward, support with stalker bolters

So i'm currently working with the list below. I'm considering merging the vanguard squads with a 5 man vet squad each and then combat squading them at the start of the game to basically give them objective secured. Do you think it's worth sacrificing the ability to deep strike in favor of giving them objective secured? (you also lose an attack and point of leadership from not having a vanguard sergeant but oh well)

Anything you would suggest changing or improving or any strategies to use? Let me know!

I would try and get some of those VV into your vet squads. The bonus of fall back and shoot is very helpful for your frag cannons.

I personally don’t think DeathWatch benefit from MSU squads. I’ve found it too easy to focus fire. I’d consider combining your 4th vet choice in the 1st battalion with one of the others.

Same thing with your hellblaster squad. I know it’s your heavy choice to unlock your relic leviathan, but sticking them in an intercessor squad gives them much needed ablative wounds. If you can scrape together the points maybe a standard contemptor with two twin lascannons?(my usual choice to unlock the relic leviathan)

Would strongly consider getting two Quad-las contemptor dreads.  BRILLIANT to make up for what the DW lack in anti-tank.

Are you absolutely sold on mono-dex?

Other than the assassin i am pretty set on staying mono-dex. I know that soup would be more effective and i do have an unbuilt knight which i can magnetise for literally any loadout including the preceptor plus some old guard models lying about but i'd rather not use them too often. Not for tournaments anyway, not for any tactical or competitive reason i just want to stay mono-dex as i love deathwatch. :)
