50 shelves of grey.

Couldn't find a thread anywhere discussing this. Forgive me if I've missed one. Apparently it's something to help paint your minis quicker. My guess is a new spray gun or more coloured of primers to add to he range, could also be something like the army painter quickshade, although something like that would seem to messy and poisonous for GW to have as part of their range. Any thoughts?

Ya, Fraters were talking about airbrushes and someone mentioned "dips", basically those army painter quickshades.

I think the video was also an incredible display of Warhammer Studios's capabilities, and captured some shots to demonstrate my point:

Beautifully composed shots, the director deserves much credit. They didn't have much space to work with, I was guessing it's GW's offices?

Great acting, this actress was very restrained. She could have gone overboard with a quizzical look, furled brow. She's acting with her forehead here, using her veins to show the intensity of the moment.

I'm also guessing it was shot in a day. The actress had a costume change, from white to grey (a purposeful choice), guy's wearing the same suit, changed his tie. They did use a filter, a tint, though. There was a warmer scene earlier. I just really like this high production value but low cost parody, kudos to all involved.

There was some speculation flying around before LVO about GW announcing their own Citadel branded airbrush gear, and there was a separate snippet about one of the discontinued Forgeworld airbrush paints making it's way back in to the general paint range (because it was noted as being used in a studio paint scheme).

Adding my own personal speculation/observations, the Iron Golems models revealed for the AoS skirmish game Warcry have dark metallic red armour, which is something that would not be straightforward to achieve with the current range of Citadel colours, and we know GW don't paint their display models with paints you can't buy from them. That's leading me to think that some of the clear colours like Angron Red might be coming back too as part of an expanded Citadel Air range.

Could be the start of an aprils fools joke too.

Or colored sprues like the Shadespire Warbands.

Dont get hyped.

I'm hoping for an airbrush, I hope I don't up a fool, an April fool, as it were.

Edit: digital cookie to whoever gets where I paraphrased that from.

just thinking outside the box (it's likely to be an airbrush) but what about pre-painted miniatures (shudder) or a miniature painting service? :-)

but I'm going with airbrush....

this was my second guess after an airbrush, however as pointed out by a club mate there is no way GW would be able to match demand.

If they made it stupidly expensive it would keep the actual demand low enough to be feasible.

Sure, a goodly number of hobbyists have the money to throw at something like that, but most people I know would rather spend the extra money on more models instead.

Don't get me wrong, GW is a great manufacturer that has an industry leading grip on their production process, but models and miniatures are not even remotely similar to something like an airbrush. Unless their outsourcing it, I'd much rather buy an airbrush from a company that specializes in making them as their first priority and not GW who are making them as a second or third priority product. But then, even if they are outsourcing it I'd still rather cut out the middle man and the extra markup and get one, again, from a company that specializes in them.

Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad guess, but I really hope GW just sticks to what their good at and doesn't try to create another half-ass offering like their first cheap airbrush.

Yeah, I hope this doesn't go the airbrush route. If they're charging $33 USD for some clippers and $18 USD for a mold line removing tool, I shudder to think how much they'd gouge their customers for even a crappy Chinese copy of someone else's airbrush.

Interestingly, earlier this week Badger said on their Facebook page that they'd be at Adepticon with NINE new products for "what we consider our biggest show of the year" and yesterday unveiled EIGHT new products in the shape of 6 paints and hose and a new cleaning fluid. So there's an undisclosed product left.....

a badger GW brush?

My bader is enroute ;D

There are a lot of budget airbrush and mini desktop compressor packages on the market now aimed at entry level airbrushers. I would be shocked if we don't get a citadel branded package at some point, it makes too much sense.

I'm also waiting for a citadel wet palette with a skull on the lid that costs £20.

Outside bet: Gundam style markers

Maybe the left-handed brushes are finally being greenlit? My leftside mechadendrites are the dominant ones so that would be a welcome addition to me. :p

I would really like to see the FW paint range folded into the main range but that doesn't sound like it would speed up the main painting process really. An airbrush seems like a good idea but the Citadel spraygun they made crashed and burned so a full on airbrush with the maintenance it requires seems a stretch. Perhaps they might also expand the airbrush paint range further? The colours they chose for the initial batch seemed odd to me (I could really have done with a pre-mixed Rakarth Flesh for example).

I really don't feel confident in predicting where GW is planning to go with this. I just hope it is awesome.

Shouldn't this thread be in the news & rumor section as it deals with as of now yet unreleased product?

Anyway, rumors I've heard so far include:

  1. airbrush gun
  2. dipping paints
  3. ampullas of Duncans blood
  4. colored plastics across the whole line
  5. pre-primed miniatures (unlikely due to 6.)
  6. pre-painted miniatures (GW on facebook disproved this one)
  7. acrylic pens
  8. wet palette
  9. decal stickers

edit:

removed untrue rumors

I really hope its not pre-primed mini's. I saw some of those for d&d and pathfinder in a shop today.

I only picked 4 of the blisters off the shelves to look at, all of them had truly disturbing mold lines. I'm a fairly average painter at best but there is no way i could paint something without cleaning up the mold lines!

im leaning towards colour plastic, they coloured kits are coming out of China so if they do this they would be slashing their costs across thier main lines

.

my out of left field option is that they are moving to dropper bottles XD

We can only hope. I have quit buying citadel paint as I have unopened paints which are hardened. Mostly the whites

False hope, I would be almost certain of. This is being billed as something to get those grey minis painted...an airbrush or sanctioned painting service makes at least some sense. Changing the paint packaging to a format some people like better, not so much.

So I'm going to start with "I was wrong based on wording from GW Community on Shadowspear's contents," so I don't fully trust GW to use what I feel are straightforward interpretations of their wording.

Let's look at the actual wording they used here though when they were talking about the "50 Shelves of Grey":

Our first hints at a new weapon for the arsenal of every painter

adding something huge to our paint range that’s going to make painting your models even simpler

So, to me (which clearly I have some interpreting issues with the wording on WHC), these two statements mean that the following aren't really in the running:
  • ampullas of Duncans blood
  • colored plastics across the whole line
  • pre-painted miniatures
  • pre-primed miniatures
  • decal stickers
  • dropper bottle containers for paints
  • more new paint colors/expanded paint range
My reasoning is as follows:

Ampullae of Duncan's blood - they indicated a new weapon, and this is already included in the painting line in small quantities as Blood for the Blood God :D

Colored plastic - this wouldn't be an addition to the paint range, it would be a change to the model range, and it doesn't help you get models painted more simply, it makes it so your models have a specific color without painting at all, which runs counter to the idea, and makes it so you may not even need GW's Base paints (which would be counter to their business model)

Pre-painted miniatures - again, that's not an addition to the paint range, nor would it be a new weapon in the arsenal of painters (in that the painter possesses it)

Pre-primed miniatures - I'm not sure how they would pull this off and allow for mold-line removal (you'd end up with places where the model isn't primed), and you'd end up with join areas that the plastic glue wouldn't work well on - seems like it might take more effort than it would be worth - it also wouldn't be a "new weapon in the arsenal" in the "painting range"

Decal stickers - I'm not honestly sure how a decal sticker helps get things painted any more simply than current decals do

Dropper bottles - per totalfailure, dropper bottles don't really get miniatures painted in a more simple fashion, they just change the container (yes, they would make mixing paint easier and more accurate, and would probably add longevity to the paint, but mixing paint doesn't make painting more simple, it's more complicated and they have their Base -> Shade -> Drybrush/Layer -> Highlight/Glaze method they promote, which droppers don't enhance)

More new/expanded paints in the range - this one doesn't really satisfies the "new weapon" idea as a whole

Based on the statements from WHC, I think that these are more likely:

  • airbrush
  • dipping paints/pots
  • more colored sprays (or have the colored sprays actually be primers)
  • acrylic pens
  • wet palette
Airbrush - I know I had said this at one point, but I don't know that I really want it to be the answer - while it might help with base coating and maybe even zenithial highlighting, it's not more simple and may not readily fit into their painting system (however, they already have the Air line, so they acknowledge people using airbrushes with their color system, so expanding that line and their own airbrush isn't outside higher possibility) - I do think it will be overpriced for what you get

Dipping paints/pots - I think this is a high probability, and would fit the new weapon idea, although I don't want it to be the answer - even the Shades need some thinning to work best, so a huge pot of their current formulation would not be my preference, but overall, this could make the paint method easier

More colored sprays/primers - I think this is one of the most straight-forward ideas, but isn't necessarily a new weapon, just an expansion of what they already have

Acrylic pens - not sure how well these would work, and if they would have much applicability depending on size they choose, but they would probably fit all the statements

Wet palette - this seems like a good possibility (can't think of arguments against it really) and it would fit the statements

Anyway, my thoughts on the subject based on the limited info we have so far.

Interesting analysis, although I'd probably put the wet palette in the same category as the dropper bottles - hey, it's nice that your paints will go a few days without drying out, but would it really make you any more likely to power through a horde of grey plastic because of that? I think not. I am surprised they haven't done their own wet palette already, but I don't think it fits their own hype.

I think the most likely are a major push on airbrushing, some dipping product, or some product like the Gundam markers. Which would all basically be ripping off an existing product of someone else's, of course. I think the main thing we can expect is this to be disappointing, whatever it is, and likely being done by someone else already, anyway. Now just with GW branding, and a 100% markup, of course.

Short of chaining Duncan or Peachy to my desk with a bowl of water and kibble, I don't really think this will be all that much. Although Duncan and Peachy are likely aware of it and have probably already made videos for whatever this is, with lead times and all. Maybe we can crack the whip on them and get them to spill the beans while they're chained up, painting my armies :)?
