Where/How to Get Chainaxes ?

Recommended Posts

Hello friends! I am working on refreshing my berzerkers using the new CSM kit, which is really just chocked full of some awesome bits.

My plan is to use the heads/shoulders from the FW world eaters kit, which are really amazing, to set these guys apart from regular CSM. I am undecided on chainaxes though. These are the options I've come up with and would appreciate any other ideas I may have missed...

1 - FW chainaxe kit - the downside to these is they look super fiddly and I'd have to carve bolt pistols off the hands of the CSM kit

2 - Anvil Industries chainaxe kit - these already have the hands sculpted to them, so the upside is they would probably be the easiest to use

3 - Cut up the axes from my old zerkers...

4 - Try to aquire 7 of the shadowspear CSM champions and cut their axe hands off. Honestly, I like this idea the best though I cursory view of eBay makes it seem impractical.

There's also going to be a chainaxe in the new terminators kit so you could use that, but like the shadowspear champion option it would be difficult and probably annoyingly expensive, given there's only one chainaxe bit in the kit it's going to be selling for a high price.

Kromlech sells these

I think they are a bit larger, and decent quality. Do note that its one of their older designs, and i have noticed a bit of a quality difference between the older and newer designs (newer is crisper). Also, no hands on the handle which requires some iffy handle chopping..

If you want something by a Chaos player for the Chaos community, please give me some time. I've said in another thread, I've been bogged down with life, the universe, and everything the last while, but I am getting back in the studio and Chaos is my first and favourite muse. I'm simply refusing to jump on 3D modeling until I've got the kits in-hand (already ordered) so that I can really mimic the design cues GW is using, make sure the scale is a perfect match, and have the models so I can test fit my components to ensure 100% compatibility along with a seamless look. However, I'll be open and say it will take some time to get stuff into production due to the juggling I'm doing; small bits like Axes and combat weapons should be faster than other more complex models, but right now everything is taking longer than I would like but there's not much I can do about it for now.

I actually have a lot of time. I'm currently finishing up an Ultramarines army for a campaign and will be moving on to chaos in a month or more. World Eaters are my first love and I am wanting to make this unit of zerkers as amazing as possible. If you could PM even a ball park schedule, and any other details you might have, that would be awesome. I will plan on holding off axe purchases for a while, as I'm always wanting to support a fellow B&C'er when I can.

If you're taking requests, combi plas halves that fit the combi bolters in the new termi box would also be great.

I'm probably going to hold off getting the new termies until Subtle's accesdories for them are available. In the mean time, I'll be ordering a pack of fw legion chain axes with which to convert my exisying chaos terminators. They're close enough yo the new models that I won't be bothered running them in the same army (though not the same units). Will have some regular termies and, eventually, some fancy termies to run as abaddon's bodyguard.

O yeah sign me up for those combi plasma halves. Based on looking at pictures of the new terminators sprue I don't think the FW combi weapons will fit with the new kit, so we'll be needing combi-plas halves that fit.

I also think I'll be converting up old terminators with chainaxes,  the new terminators are very nice but the quality difference isn't big enough that I'm going to replace all 12 or so old terminators I have. Already going to be spending loads on replacing old marines.

Bluh, i tried t o make another thread collecting first & third party rotor cannon options plus possible conversion ideas, and after an hour putting the post together i accidentally refreshed the page & lost it, so... boo to me i guess.

Anyway, off topic or not, here's a couple options for those:

The Reliquary has some as well (also has chaincannons, which is also something folks are looking for).  Never used them myself, so can't comment on quality or service:

I think shadowspear will go OOP like similar boxes such as forgebane, wake the dead etc. Unless GW wants to keep it in circulation as an unofficial start collecting thing. Best bet would be to wait for new CSM boxes to get in circulation for chainaxes, but I still foresee premium prices for this on bitz sites.

Best value for money I've seen is Anvil Industry:

I've use the Pop Goes the Monkey ones but found the prints to be a bit disappointing. Forge World's offering look nice and aren't badly priced, but mine were plagued with bubbles and are very fragile.

I love the look of the Conversion World ones, but they're very pricey. Also very interested to see what Subtle Discord comes up with!

Got my first of what I expect to be three orders today; Abaddon and a squad of Marines and I'm glad I'm waiting until I have the kits in hand. Havocs and Terminators will be next, naturally. The trim details are a bit more subtle than on the previous kits, and this is good because it's exactly in the range I prefer for 3D printing reasons. Little things like the belt-fed ammo is simply attached to a satchel on the hip is nice, I can do that! ... but I'm still partial to drums and magazines.

I can see now that a good Combi solution for the Power Armour Marines is something seriously lacking, along with the requisite combat weapons. I want to try and figure out how I can do something slimmer/lighter than the Terminator one while still keeping enough bulk to have it magnatize. I'm not sure if I want to make a bit to fit the GW Terminator kit or if I want to keep to making an entire weapon, and the bit might just fit the GW kit as well. But again, I'm tempted to do something different than the kinda' bulky and clunky side-by-side setup they've done; if it is going to be side-by-side I'd like it to be a bit leaner, if possible, and I'm still partial to over-under or staggered at an angle.

I need to button up the current Rhino and Predator projects that are having final master 3D prints and moulds done, and then I want to turn my focus to what major gaps I can fill in these kits. The scale of these components is perfect for what I can do with Servitor Solus, so it's a good sidetrack to take to work on some smaller things before diving back into larger projects to continue supporting the growing new Chaos line. What a good time to be bad! But so much to do, never enough time!!

I'm a bit wary of 3d printed parts and their wavy lines.

Hello!

Owning a store on Shapeways I can tell you about the quality about the printing. The wavy lines are incredibly little (we are speaking of microns) on the bits I sell on my store (and on Pops Goes the Monkey too, using the same type of printer), but they have a side that has minor quality. Obviosly I make that side a less visible one (most of the times the inferior one or a part that goes on direct contact with the miniature).
