Difficulty Painting - Legio Tempestus colour

Recommended Posts

Yeah, it's an extremely frustrating scheme if you want to very closely match the Book 4 art. It's a complex mix of blues and hard and soft edges breaking them up, and to preserve your sanity I think it's probably best to do something 'color plate adjacent' rather than as close to the art as possible (as great as the art looks). I can never recommend extensive paint mixing, because at least in my own case I end up spending more time blending paints than finishing models...

I think it's just a matter of picking a mid-range blue that you like and running with it, and if you really want to stick closer to the art's style, then maybe 1:1 using your chosen blue with both a light grey and a darker blue for 3-tone pattern variety. Vallejo's game color Ultramarine Blue is a decent start (get game air over game color if using airbrush). I think GW's Macragge Blue is a little too dark, but the Altdorf blue might work alright? And if you can find some, Formula P3's Cygnar Blue & Cygnar Blue Highlight are great.

edit: I had a closer look through my paints, and GW's Macragge Blue is lighter than online color chips made out. I also can't attest to these, but Vallejo Model Color Flat Blue & Darkblue might be decent shouts. Model Color is a pain to airbrush if you're going that way, but perfect via brush. What I can say is that of the blues I do have in their range, French Blue, Royal Blue, Magic Blue, and Electric Blue (all model & game AIR) won't get you close to the color plates. Keep in mind when shopping Vallejo to be very specific with the name, spelling, and what range it's in. The ranges include Model Color, Model Air, Game Color, Game Air, Metal Color, and now they even have another range called Fantasy Pro, if it wasn't confusing enough already.

There are definitely a lot of solid blue Tempestus engines around that look fantastic without fussing with the broken-up pattern, too.

If you're leaning Traitor, keep in mind that the scheme and heraldry may change as the Heresy continues. The old AT88 scheme has patterns with more defined edges and contrast, and instead of the white sections we see in Conquest, these have lilac purple. That could be one direction to run in to denote "late Heresy" Tempestus, in a similar way to Andy Hoare's late-Heresy Emperor's Children and their mostly-black vehicles.

Heck, under the arcane prognostications of Teleologicalica, certain patterns and shades of blue used on an engine could even reflect the supposed calamities that your engine will inflict in the future (or unbeknownst to the crew, their own doom spelled out in patterns they can't possibly understand the significance of).

What he said...another thing to consider is the lozenge camouflage used on WW1 aircraft. I know they make large decals of various patterns, some patience and micro sol/set might a stunning Titan make...
