Lifeafter
It seems that everyone's into thunder hammer/storm shield jump captains. Has anyone had success with dual lightning claws? It comes with an additional attack and re-rolls to wound. Since captains already have 4+, is the storm shield that big a deal? MadEdric
For a character, you need to decide what is his purpose, and what are going to be the affect of his weapons. Most go for the thunder hammer because it gives the biggest payout for WS 2+ and 4-5 attacks. This could destroy a dread, vehicle, big tyranid in one round. Lightning claws give one more attack and rerolling wounds. Max dmg you're going to do is the number of attacks you get plus 1, so 5-6 damage max. The thunder hammer just works better against most models in the game. Kallas
What MadEric said: Thunder Hammer is just the best payoff for the Captain's profile. Best WS/innate rerolls and most attacks is what makes it effective. Lightning Claws on a Captain are kind of nice, as they maximise the profile in a similar way, but considering that they're mostly good for killing light/medium infantry they're somewhat wasted on a Captain, whose 4(5) attacks just aren't going to dent a big squad really, and against smaller, tougher units the Hammer is better. Lifeafter
These are really great points. The 3 damage on the Thunderhammer is great. I don't think I was fully appreciating this compared to the D1 on the claws. Unless he's running into soft targets, the Thunderhammer will be more useful. Delta.Skies
on a watch captain, wouldnt be as efficient. at least you have the damage output of thunder hammer and can still be supported by mission tactics and boost in strength. LJust more value in other weapons. Blood angels on the other hand would be a different story, but thats another story. Brother Cruoris
There is a warlord trait you can take if you want the claws to have a little bit more bite. D2, hitting on 2s with reroll is nice for hunting intersessor equivalent models. If you can manage to give him might of heroes you would also wound on 3+ with rerolls. But this requires a bit more resources. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/355213-lightning-claws-or-smash-captain/#findComment-5294921 Share on other sites
