Cultist Horde Leadership and Hello!

Recommended Posts

I have been out of the game for almost 15 years. But my 8 year old son wanted to paint ‘dead robots’ Necrons so he dragged me back in to the hobby kicking and screaming :) While he is painting Necrons, I am painting Chaos Space Marines and Cultists. I have been ghosting on the sight for a few months now but now I have a question…

My original plan was to run 60 Cultists with an Iron Warriors Lord with ‘Cold and Bitter’ to stop the gutless Cultists from running. However with the new ‘Mere Mortals’ rule that is no longer an option. So does that mean the best way to run a Cultist Horde now is in groups of 10 surrounding a Dark Apostle? Are there any other options I missed?

Thanks,

The Happy Heretic

How were 10 man cultists units good before?

Fill a troops slot for 40 points, sit on objective, bolters had too low a rate of fire to do anything but kill 1 guardsman a turn.

Nothing changed about that. You can do that just fine without Legion traits.

Literally everything I listed changed

Loss of the +1 leadership from Black Legion was actually pretty big last tournament I went to, but I didn't mention that because it doesn't effect Iron Warriors.

Even at 50 points a unit, they're still 15 points cheaper than min csms for double the number of botg wounds and significantly more board coverage & bubble wrapping area. And it's not like 5 marines is going to kill much either, even with beta bolters, nor take much more incoming fire with how ap works.

Now, you can give those 5 marines a lascannon, or a chaincannon & combi bolter, or a plasmagun & combi plasmagun, and then they might actually do a bit of damage if they don't get shot first, which they probably wont be with whatever higher priority targets you run on the board. But then they're closer to 50ish points more than the cultists, and now you're comparing that one squad of 5 matines to two squads of 10 cultusts, able to sit on two objectives, taking twice as much firepower to sweep off the board, etc.

Alright let me clarify, nothing changed about that with the loss of access to Legion trait. So your claim "they are terrible now" in response to OP talking about that change makes no sense. Either they would've been terrible before already or they aren't terrible just because of that. ;)
