The Premise

So I've been wanting to start a WIP thread or whatever you want to call it to motivate myself to paint more frequently. Recently I started painting for an hour each night(ish) and have stuck to it pretty well; I've only skipped 1 day in the past week and that was due to a fun headache. Anyways I've put off making the thread due to many an excuse but it ends today!

The Background

I paint my Blood Angels with inspiration from the Blood Drinkers chapter and from the Marvel character Iron Man. So it's technically a home-brew chapter dubbed The Ironbloods (special thanks to fellow frater Majkhel for the chapter name). Outside of that I'm not much of a lore writer so I wont really be doing much beyond the odd-name for squads/characters and they wont be inspired by any stretch, so mentally prepare for that eventuality.

The Models

I plan on posting mostly "finished" models as I complete them. I may pop an old favorite up, especially if I revisit said model with a new technique I've learnt since it was "completed". An example would be a Razorback I completed in ETL2018, updated with battle damage (if I can ever figure out a way to do it well). No one wants to see the first marine I painted haha.

The Disclaimer

Being the human that I am, all of the above statements are subject to whatever whims come over me.

I just ordered some daylight lamps and an inexpensive and nice photo-box, so I'll be updating these pictures in a few days.

To kick this puppy off, here are the two most recent Intercessors I completed with my nightly hour painting. I have been practicing shading with washes and attempting battle damage with these models. I've got the hang of the shading, but I need to visit some video tutorials for battle damage. The best I can do is chipping on edges and I'm not quite happy with how it turned out. Nonetheless, each model is slightly better than the last and I can sleep well knowing that!

Good luck on your endeavor! You have a great start with those Intercessors and a 1-hour-a-day commitment is a great helper.

As for the name, you might try to think a bit about chapter customs? Rites? Allegiances? Preferred enemies/allies?

How about Iron Blood/Ironbloods(after the Iron Man of course)?

Very clean, nice work!

Thank you! I try my best to stay in the lines haha

Big fan of the gold faceplate. Really cements the veteran idea and complements the rest of the gold without being over the top. Personally not a fan of completely gold helmets so I love that conservative approach

Thanks for that! I actually "borrowed the idea from Ishagu over in the Ultramarine forum. Really thought it would make the Iron Man aesthetic more instantly noticeable. I never thought about using it for veterancy, to be honest, I've just been throwing gold around like candy :teehee:

I never truly believed in the 1 hour a day painting until I finally went and tried it, but wow, it's perfect for me. I have no feeling of burn out at the end, and I end up looking forward to finishing whatever tasks I have set about me that day so I can get my hour of painting in.

I'm loving that name! I may very well end up stealing that name (and giving full credit to you of course), I just want to juggle it around in my head for a day and see how it fits. I've got good feeling about it however!

The Photography Update

The lamps and photo box I ordered came in this evening! I set it all up rather haphazardly and experimented following GW miniature photography guide on the community website. Outside of upgrading from a lower end phone camera I think the thing I can do to improve the photos is to soften the light. GW claims I can easily do this with tracing paper in front of the light, so I'll give that a shot when I have an opportunity to pick some up. Anyways, we're not here to see me ramble; here's my first attempts at amateur miniature photography. These are the same two intercessors as above, I have a sergeant that I may have completed tomorrow (as long as Easter preparations don't waylay me).

EDIT: I somehow forgot to mention that I finally have a name for my chapter; The Ironbloods! Absolutely full credit goes to Majkhel, thank you so much for the excellent suggestion!

Funnily enough your pic in the OP was already good enough that I wasn't too bothered about no photobox unlike it's the case with many other armyprojects, however better is better of course! Congrats on your new setup, it makes your models look even better!

First off, thank you all for the kind words! I appreciate all the support and feedback from everyone so very much!

The holiday weekend completely impeded any progress I could have made and my finals are this week so my poor sergeant will have to languish half painted for another few days.... But I shall press on (later)!

Gorgeous and clean paint job!
You should bring your ideas for the ironbloods to the Liber forum and get an IA fleshed out

Maybe down the road I'll give it a shot, though I can't make any promises; it took me almost 5 years just to get a name and settle on a color scheme and I had to be given that name! :teehee:

What Photobox did you use?

So this is the name it has on Amazon:

Mini Photo Studio Box, PULUZ 20cm Portable Photography Shooting Light Tent Kit, White Folding Lighting Softbox with 20 LED Lights + 6 Backdrops for Product Display

It's pretty basic and it absolutely could have been DIY'd, but I'm happy with it for the price and it should serve my needs for a good bit.

Great looking scheme! For me the yellow-green eyes are too close in colour to the gold so they look odd. Have you tried an ice blue? More iron-man like, and will stand out more!

I didn't notice it until now, but the photography has made the eyes look more yellowish than they are, but I do like the blue lens suggestion; it's definitely something I will give a shot! I can see it looking great and it would be more thematic! I didn't even consider the color clash when I started doing the gold faceplates :blush.:

  • 3 months later...

I posted my completed Librarian Dreadnought over on the Blood Angel ETL page, but I wanted to add them to my plog just for posterity's sake as well.

As I use it in games I will give him his name and write it on the blank scroll on the front of the Dread.

I forgot how to take proper photos between the last time I took them and now; I'll be relearning what settings to use and write them down.

This summer has been super busy between a trip and summer courses; when things slow back down in the fall semester I'll be getting more models painted up outside of the remaining half of my ETL vow and maybe a few potential Primaris LOOtenant vows.

EDIT: I forgot a lot of words...
