HH book confusion- what do I need for IW?

You know, there's a thread named What Books do I need ? stickied right at the top of this subforum.

But yeah, you pretty much figured it out for yourself already. The three books you mentioned will suffice.

If you wan't to include certain automata, or want to run a mechanicum allied detachment, the Taghmata Army List could be helpful.

Eventually specific black books for the lore and / or campaign rules / missions.

IW is covered in black book three.

If you have no books at all and want to start out with a 30k army and you want to minimise your book expenditure, I suggest that you buy the red rule book only and download battlescribe on your computer (or phone/tablet).

Battlescribe not only helps out making army lists, it also contains the unit rules and special rules (sometimes summarised). In battlescribe when you place your mousepointer over a specific wargear entry/word or unit entry/word there is a window that pops up with all the characteristics and rules for that wargear/unit.

So if you're on a tight budget then just get the red game rules book and download battlescribe.

If you're alright spending the $$$ then it depends on whether you want the fluff or not.

Without fluff, then you just need the following two red books for complete rules for IW or any other legion (bar BA, DA, WS):

  • The Horus Heresy – Legiones Astartes: Age of Darkness Legions
  • The Horus Heresy – Legiones Astartes: Age of Darkness Army List

If you want the IW rules with the fluff, then get black book three (extermination).

Cheers I saw the sticky, was still confused lol. Anyway, it seemed like not all the general unit content was in the red books. I am assuming that all the general legion stuff is in the red books, but not everything has a dedicated model yet. Example, pravian guy and the sniper guy are recent releases, thought they were general units for legions added to later black books etc.

EDIT Like how privateer press do it.

Yes, the red books are several years old, so naturally they don't have the new units and updates. Black book three is even older I think.

If you really want every rule with every FAQ/update compiled and gathered in one source then Battlescribe is the best option, the guys behind it updates the software with every FAQ/update/new book.

I see, do the offical FW electronic books auto update like privateer's waroom for new content?
