Dice boxes, the new fad.

What are people thoughts on dice Towers?

I use dice towers when I'm playing Advanced Squad Leader and other strategy games when you use fewer dice  (1-6).

Have to build a larger dice tower to use it in 40k

When it comes to RPGs I´ll use a dice cup instead.

Found my old DiceTower project.

The big one has 2 separate tracks so you can pickup and reroll while not removing the successful dice

Not a fan of dice towers. They are loud and super unnecessary compared to dice boxes.

Had a great discussion about this, most dice towers are not made well. They are made from ill-fitted wood or plastic that vibrates when hit. A good dice tower would have sturdy exterior and softer interior with felt lining and some sort of sponge on the underside. However then they are too expensive. Done right though they can work and be quiet.

The other issue is the amount of dice it can roll at once.

I think each has their purpose, dice towers for small games where every roll counts (kill team). Dice boxes for larger games where you don't need perfectly rolled dice Everytime (40k/HH)

I'm kinda leaning towards using an old phone exclusively for Dice rolling app. I HAVE dice, but compared to a few button presses and a quick flick of the wrist with it highlighting the necessary dice? So much easier and less stuff to carry (well another phone but this is my stepmoms old iPhone back when they were the size of a cellphone so it fits comfortably in my pocket)

Depends on the app you are using I think. If there is a wargaming affiliated company one that rolls D6 wouldn't mind. Some random one I would be super wary of you using- unless you let me use the app as well. If I can't, we are using dice and you can use mine, don't care if people use my dice. Never understood issue with others being protective of dice, they aren't spirit stones where your opponent can steal your soul haha.

Are you sure?

Very sure. Also I find most times I offer few take me up on the offer anyway, those that do I find we end up having a more "yea man sure 420" laid back game. I always purposely use my opponents dice without asking at least one, the ones that lose it are usually unpleasant people anyway. Or if they say please don't do it I apologize and obviously stop. Its a good way to pick out someone for hot dice (loaded/tampered)  by doing it that way. Caught a few too...

(Ah nostalgia - how you make us forget all the :censored: there was “back then” :laugh.: )

I just got a horrid flashback to the day in second ed my brother plonked his dreadnought with an assault cannon on each arm in front of my space wolves and unleashed a potential 18 strength 8 d10 wound shots at my unsuspecting Blood Claws...then watched in horror as it single handed wiped my force.

I used to use smaller box lids from the likes of Space Fleet or Dark Millenium and we'd put it on the tallest piece of terrain where we could both reach it.

Yeah while I understand the attachment to dice, I've never had that, and I'd happily let someone use my dice roller app or forward it to them or to just use my phone because it's a spare phone that doesn't have service anymore, it pretty much is a dice roller phone.

And it's so much easier if you got, a Kardashian Butt load of guard or Orks to roll for to do an app.

I got a crown Royal sack filled with chessex fire d6 dice (though the color is slightly different from the 12 I had previously...which is annoying to me but eh) but I really do just like the app better. Less stuff to carry and all. If I could afford a iPad and get the codexes on it I'd get one so i didn't have to lug the books around.

Really wish you could buy forgeworld rules ala cart.

I was given a dice tray for my birthday and really enjoy it. No more loud rolls and dice (usually) stay on the table. The sides are low so viewing the dice from any angle is easy. I usually put it into the middle of the table to my opponent can use it if they want and all rolls are easily visible. Also I tend to roll the dice towards my opponent so it's easier for them to see.

I’ve always wanted to make a dice tower, perhaps line the inside with black felt (after reading some of the comments on here about noise) and decorate the outside with bitz. I saw one once which look like an industrial tower with a (clear-resin-filled) pool at the bottom and the dice came out of the tower into the pool.

I use a smaller dice box that I made, lined with felt and UV LEDs when I play at other places to make sure that the dice don't scatter or get cocked or end up off the table, especially for squads who fire a lot of shots. We usually play with a house rule that a dice that's off the table counts as a failure.

When at home, I use a bigger box that me and my brother made, that has a infinity mirror and a smoke machine, for the same reasons, but also cause it looks cool. The high walls also mean you can throw your dice pretty hard without having to worry about them bouncing out.

Back in the late 90s I was rolling my dice inside the lid for 40k's 3rd edition corebox and in WFB's 5th edition box before that. To many enthusiastic rolls by young teenagers were endangering the models or flying off the table. Lol.

I like the idea, absolutely support it. Its best if the box isnt too small and is placed such that both players can see the roll. A side table works well, or momentary placement in a clear spot if available in the middle of the table works if the box is small enough.

Now, similarly "dice towers" are a thing, but they can obscure the roll and who needa another big boxy thing to transport to a game these days... Tho if it looks like a cool 40k terrain piece itself, thats neat too.
