Brother Navaer Solaq
q. if necrons play mostly against IG (tank based) and chaos undivided (daemons and marines) which squad is better? 3 heavy destroyers or 2 destroyers with 1 heavy destroyer Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/355562-destroyer-comparison/ Share on other sites
Beatnik cryptek
How about a tesla ark with gauss cannons? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/355562-destroyer-comparison/#findComment-5303029 Share on other sites
NTaW
I think that the number of shots provided by the gauss cannons on standard Destroyers, specially when combined with the Extermination Protocols stratagem, is better for taking wounds off high Toughness models. That being said I have not had much luck at all with any combination. The problem I've often had is mostly summed up in numbers of units: I have 3-6 tank hunting units but they have double that number of tanks, and if I'm lucky enough to get a first shot off and blow a couple up my enemy is easily in range and LoS to wipe my AT elements from the table. derLumpi
A mate is playing 3x3 destroyers and with re rolls he is shooting almost everything off the board. Mr4Minutes
Why only 3 destroyers? Take 6 to maximize the stratagem. I personally don’t like one shot weapons with a random damage(d6) because they tend to rule meh for me. I know we’re talking destroyers, but I’d consider taking a DDA or two for anti vehicle hunting. It’s a chance for more shots at least. Then I’d use the destroyers for elite hunting. The biggest concern with a squad of 3 destroyers to me is they’re easier to wipe, negating RP. That’s why I suggest 5-6 and possibly a cryptek with a cloak to keep up with them. Beatnik cryptek
Ok you don't like heavy weapons that do d6 damage. I understand and can respecT that, icd like to see most of them convert to 2d3 myself. Now as to a tesla ark, it can fire as a 24" assault d6 s5 ap4 d3 weapon. So you get a fixed 3 dam per hit. I think a lot of d6y shots and damage weapons should be converted to 2d3 personally. Emicus
I like 5+1. Regular Destroyers just have so many more shots, but I sneak the 1 Heavy inn there as a lucky D6 wowser, and they can split fire anyway.6 because its the biggest size you can get, the most chance of getting them to reanimate and more efficient stratagem use. Brother Navaer Solaq
thanks for replys. it looks like having a small squad is really not a good idea at all whether it is heavy or normal destoryers. NTaW
Max size units are the best size units for Necrons I'd say. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/355562-destroyer-comparison/#findComment-5304330 Share on other sites
Brother Chaplain Tyranus
Plus dont forget reanimation protocals. Much easier to reanimate something when there are models left in the unit. I like to drop a 6 man squad and put them either with a cryptek for +1 to reanimate or dropped from a night scythe. MithrilForge
i have had units of 3 and units of 6... the unit of 3 always got focus fired into the ground but the 6 unit always seemed to have a spark of hope ...much to my mates suprise when a few would return..."Why won't they damn well die" is one of the responses i get when i play full squads. it is pricey both unit wise and model purchasing wise as well but if your looking for a desired effect when encountering armor etc then tailoring your army with bigger squads of Destroyers and Heavy D's is required. Also if your like me and the weapon arms always seem to be breaking of during transport or play then attach them straight to the side of the armpit socket like its a mounted weapon ... or even attach it to the front of their torso? Destroyers are Freaking Angry Psycho Necrons...they'd want their weapons as part of them good luck with your Dynasty!
