Stray
So the March April spring(?) FAQ is out. Lots to process in it, but of note is this: 'It is possible, through various Warlord Traits and the Rotate Ion Shields Stratagems, for an Imperial or Renegade Knight to boost its invulnerable saving throw to 3+. Considering a Knight is already an exceptionally tough and resilient unit to face, we feel this is too much for most opponents to contend with. To that end, we are making a minor adjustment to the Rotate Ion Shields Stratagem that limits the maximum saving throw afforded from 3+ to 4+' No Knight, regardless of relic or stratagem, can ever now have better than a 4++ save. ...Oh and the Castellan went up by 100 points too Discuss... Focslain
Well personally this doesn't effect me at all. At least in my 2K list that I'd take the castellan in I just swap the crusader with a warden and done. Plus this gives me a nice mid-field unit and I'm liking the warden the more I use it these days. As for rotate, that saves me CP and most likely will save CP for a lot of lists that include the dominus pattern w/ Ion bulwark and FW knights (most have 4++ built in). I can see the castellan being shelved for most games except in full knight lists and with the Rotate change CP being used either elsewhere or just on other knights that still have the 5++. I was hoping that they will drop the cost of the dominus rotate to 2CP seeing as it can only be used for a 4++ now. I was fine on a 3++ being 3CP, 4++... not so much. Clingy
I think I’m ok with the 4++ restriction as games where I fielded more than one knight I’d find that if I gave one a 3++ the enemy would simply target a knight that had a 5++ More often the not I was spacing stuff out with 4++ 4++ Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/355602-new-faq-impacts-knights/#findComment-5303954 Share on other sites

hermanista
Well I'm glad I got to run out the castellan once before it became obsolete. The 4++ I think is fair, but they've (GW) missed the mark. The problem is the cp batteries with House Raven, and it's not like a 1750/2000 soup list will struggle to drop 100 points so the problem remains. But for a pure knight list, that's half an admirer or nearly a third of a gallant Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/355602-new-faq-impacts-knights/#findComment-5304158 Share on other sites

But for a pure knight list, that's half an admirer or nearly a third of a gallant People are already talking about adjusting by rolling out either a Porphyrion or a couple of Crusaders in it's place, so we'll just likely see the same old lists with slight adjustments. You're totally right, the issue was always being able to funnel silly CP into a unit that was internally balanced to be CP hungry with little CP available to it. That said, I guess we all knew the louder voices would prevail and get the Castellan put on the naughty step eventually, and all in all, it's not a bad FAQ - a fair number of long standing 'issues' have been finally handled. (I admit I was a little pleased to see assassins capped as they have been for example, tee hee). hermanista
Though I'll be honest, now that I'm up to 19 knights in total, a complete household for me, she is intended to be number 19 and the last of them, with lights and smoke generators. For me, it'll be back to the crusaders most likely. Overwatch still only hits on a 6... I think Clingy is referring to this: 'Q: When a rule allows a model or unit to take an action (move, shoot, charge, fight or attempt to manifest a psychic power) outside of the normal turn sequence, and that rule explicitly mentions to make that action as if it were a different phase of the turn structure to the current one, e.g. ‘That unit can shoot as if it were the Shooting phase’, do rules that are normally used during that phase (in the example this would be the Shooting phase) take effect? Is the same true of Overwatch attacks? A: With the exception of Stratagems, all rules (e.g. abilities, Warlord Traits, psychic powers etc.) that would apply in a specific phase apply to actions that are taking place ‘as if it were that phase’. However, if a Stratagem specifies that it must be used in a specific phase, then it can only be used in that phase (e.g. you cannot use a Stratagem that says ‘Use this Stratagem in the Shooting phase’ to affect a unit that is Shooting ‘as if it were the Shooting phase’). For the purposes of this FAQ, Overwatch attacks are also considered to be attacks made as if it were your Shooting phase.' It's a bit convoluted innit? It just seems to say 'if you have a rule that effects shooting phase actions, it effects overwatch too because that's being called part of the shooting phase, BUT you can't play a 'use during the shooting phase' strat, during overwatch'? I confess I'm not sure how that effects Kastellans... Gaz1858
Well it makes them better in overwatch with 18 shots each that re-roll misses when Cawls about... Nusquam
The nerf to Rotate Ion Shields is mitigated by Machine Spirit Resurgent and the points increase for the Castellan isn't a true fix; it's a knee jerk panic move. The Raven Wrathstellan is worth the +100 points but any other configuration is shelved now. They needed to nerf the wombo combo of being a Castellan that is Mechanicus, with Order of Companions, and Cawls Wrath. People took Ion Bulwark for the 4++, sure, but unless you fought another castellan or shadowsword 3CP is steep for the +1 when you can just us MSR. Since I run Tarranis I probably won't use my Castellan and instead opt for a Crusader and more Scions. I might even just run a single Shadowsword and two Helverins. It's 54 points more, but also 22 more wounds across three targets... All in all its a slap on the wrists. Gaz1858
The main points I notice for this FAQ are 1. Cawl giving rerolls on overwatch shots. Pretty huge 2. The change to FLY keyword meaning that screens have to work differently to how they worked before as they can be just flown over 3. Iknights are easier to kill based on a 4++ maximium Does anyone else see anything that should advise our list building from here on in? Charlo
Cawl gives rerolls to hit in the shooting phase. New FAQ says when things happen "as if it was the X phase" then all rules apply that normally would. Overwatch is specifically called out as an example of this. Therefore: Cawl gives rerolls in overwatch. Combine with overwatch on 5+ Warlord trait....! Frostglaive
So if Cawl now allows rerolls in Overwatch, that'd imply the Dominus allows reroll 1's too, since their aura also states Shooting Phase.
