temneb
Hi guy's and girls. I remember seeing a new band of coloured metallic airbrush paints, wither advertised on this site or somewhere else no this forum. Can anyone help with that? Failing that who uses what, and why? I'm thinking of a metallic deep purple for my dark elder armour and vehicles. Cheers for the help in advance. Marshal Vespasian
https://www.warcolours.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=59&product_id=77 These might be the ones you are looking for? I tried the turqoise one out for alpha legion and it looks good. Sadly the don't always have an appropriate hightlight colour for the coloured metallics, Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/355627-coloured-metallic-airbrush-paints/#findComment-5304505 Share on other sites
Imren
So if you want ready-made metallic purples then check out greenstuffworld.com that sells the followoing two paints that you might find useful for your project: Chameleon toxic purple: This is a colour shift paint that shifts between pinkish purple and bluish purple. This one you might not want to highlight as the highlight layer might reduce the colourshift effect. Metallic paint Persian violet: This is a darker metallic purple/violet that you probably can highlight. If you feel too lazy to mix in a wee bit of silver in your Persian Violet then you can check out Scale75 Amethyst as a highlight colour. If you're into airbrushing then I can also recommend you the following paint scheme: Prime black With airbrush base coat all over with Vallejo metal color gunmetal With airbrush do panel highlights with Vallejo metal color chrome Do edge highlights with paintbrush using a pale silver (runefang silver or vallejo model air chrome) Mix Scale75 Inktensity violet with thinner at a ratio of 1:20 (20 drops o thinner for each drop of inktensity violet (Use Tamiya X20A or Vallejo airbrush thinner or any other thinner of your choice, you want alcohol based thinner here since you're looking for rapid drying to prevent speckles and any runniness or pooling when applying the ink). The inktensity ink range is quite intense so be careful with them or they go very dark, better build up your purple in thin transparent coats until you're happy. Lightly and neatly airbrush a thin coat of the inktensity solution ove the model. You will see that the gunmetal areas will quickly go dark and the violet colour is more prevalent on the chrome areas and the edges. Do another layer until you're happy with the violet tone. temneb
Cheers guys. I found the greenstuff paints in the interim. They look the goods. They're not the ones I remember through. Imren, you wouldn't happen to have some pics of the end result. Thanks for the tutorial as well. Imren, you wouldn't happen to have some pics of the end result. Thanks for the tutorial as well. I haven't done violet yet, but I do my Alpha legion (see pic below) with the same method as the violet procedure above, I just switch out the violet ink to transparent blue and green to make a turquise layer over the gunmetal/chrome base layer instead of a violet. I just use 2-3 passes with the diluted turquiose mix with the airbrush so that the turqoise don't get too dark. temneb
Sweet mate. Love it. What compressor are you running, think I’ll upgrade my basic kit for this project. Midlight
Wasn't https://turbodork.com/ was it? Lots of metallic colours, fairly new. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/355627-coloured-metallic-airbrush-paints/#findComment-5304565 Share on other sites
Imren
Sparmax TC-610, I like it because it was at the time (five years ago) the best trade-off between having a tank (you really want a tank to buffer the air supply from compressor to get constant, smooth airflow) being less noisy and the price. I think this model has been replaced by TC-610H plus that is almost the same thing but the regulator and water catcher is mounted on the chassis. https://store.sparmaxair.com/collections/compressors/products/tc-610h-plus I think you can find it cheaper from other vendors than buying straight from the manufacturer. Arkhanist
New ranges of coloured metallics I can think of that are new(ish) are Turbodork and greenstuffworld, as already linked, and instar metallics. I have a handful of turbodork and GSW metallics via assetdrop, and like them both with their colour change paints; also have some instar paints which I like, but can't warrant their metallics quality personally. Vallejo have recently introduced their airbrushable mecha range but their metallics section is limited. Vallejo metal color is their big pots of steel/aluminium/chrome paints that are quite possibly the best airbrush metallics, but no coloured bar copper and a pale gold. Darkstar metallics have a lot of nice golds and coppers and bronzes that brush well, but have been around a couple of years and no purple or the like. Scale 75 has a very solid range of metallics that's been around a bit too, but has a decent range of coloured metallics in the 'alchemy' section and are becoming much better known - I'm definitely a Scale 75 fanboy now, once I started using their own alcohol based thinner vs standard acrylic airbrush thinner. If you start with a coloured metallic, you can create your own gradient by adding a dark or light silver. Or just do it in a straight silver gradient then tint with thin glazes of ink for the colour, as Imren lays out. Evil Eye
Well, I need that Turbodork stuff now. Especially Bubblegum Crisis, as quite aside from the uses it'll have for my Slaanesh stuff it's named after one of my favourite animes ever. temneb
Thank you vey much guy's This has helped immensely. I do like the people eater purple. Might just be the way they show you a miniature painted as an example. If I wanted a darker overall look with your technique, more intense shadows and highlights, how would you go about it? What airbrush do you recommend? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/355627-coloured-metallic-airbrush-paints/#findComment-5304857 Share on other sites
temneb
How does this stack up against your model? Rolair-AB5-0.5HP-Oil-Free-Ultra-Quiet-Air-Compressor This looks similar, but about $100 cheaper. Im in Australia, so the model came in a $450 ish. plus I could pick this up on the weekend in Melbourne. Magos Takatus
Those Turbodork paints look tasty. I have some of the Green Stuff World colourshift paints that are really nice used with an airbrush. I own some of their metallic paints but I haven't used them through an airbrush yet. My Steampunk Copper bottle produces paint thick enough to be a paste and I've not thinned it down to test it yet. I might get one or two of the Turbodork paints to test them. That's quite a more powerful compressor with a bigger tank; 3.75 litres vs 2.5, 0.5hp vs 0.16hp. So it will last longer on the tank without the compressor running. The downside is it is more bulky and about twice as loud when the motor is running. So more suitable for painting in a shed or garage than a shared living room, probably. It also comes with a 1/4" BSP fitting, so you will need a hose that fits that and your airbrush - or an adapter to the usual 1/8" BSP airbrush hose, but those are easy to get. The usual cheaper hobby compressor is like this one or this one - same specs as a sparmax, but a chinese version - you see them under a variety of brand names; hobby tools does have one, but at twice the price. I have an equivalent, been running for years just fine. I wouldn't recommend for someone airbrushing all day professionally (it's probably worth going for a bigger brand in that case) but for hobbying, eh, when it's like 1/3 the price... For airbrush, I generally recommend a badger patriot 105 (USA) or harder & steenbeck ultra 2-in-1 (german) as a solid workhorse that's forgiving for newer users, but I think that latter in particular is overpriced in australia. Worth looking at the Iwata revolution HP-CR (japanese) - their equivalent to the patriot 105 I believe - Iwata spare parts such as replacement needles are eyewateringly expensive in the UK, but should be quite a bit cheaper for you. Note - the nozzle size is much more about what type of paint you're spraying, rather than the fineness of the line you can get out of it. For acrylics, 0.35 to 0.5mm is about the right size range. You can go down to a 0.2mm or ever 0.15mm if you thin the hell out of the acrylic, but are better suited to inks. A 0.5mm, like the patriot 105 or HP-CR will cover you for priming, base coating, right down to detail of about a 1mm line; you can always get a smaller nozzle & needle set to do finer work if you ever need it. temneb
A friend of mine put me on to that very compressor. I’m running the Iwata neo at the moment so I might jump to the eclipse. Thank you all for your help, it has been immensely helpful.
