Am i the only one who prefers old GW codex/rulebook art?

Recommended Posts

I was surprised so many people were in favour of 3rd edition art, I remember 3rd edition like the images Vykes provided. Thanks to the people who provided examples of good quality 3rd edition artwork.

I feel ambivalent about Games Workshop's art. I like some of the artwork in the Adeptus Mechanicus Codex even if it feels a bit rushed but I miss a lot of older images like these:

Some of them are a little dated now but I enjoy looking at them. I hope we get art a bit more like that in the future. I also think the sketch books The Gothic and the Eldritch and John Blanche's Inquisitor sketchbook are some of the best work GW has produced.

Weird that people love Blanche's style, but don't like the work he approves in his role as creative/art director or GW.

We see a lot more art that "these are GW models". You can thank Chapterhouse for that. No more art for models that don't exist, as if GW doesn't make the model, others can.

Art has also shifted from single character studies, really exemplifying the nature of that one race/character, to larger battle scenes, which, while they give an idea of how 'vast' the Imperium is, how epic the battles, it's missing the heart.

Weird that people love Blanche's style, but don't like the work he approves in his role as creative/art director or GW.

I don't find it that weird to be honest. Just because he approved of something it doesn't make it the same as his own work.

I know. I just find it strange that someone lauded as shaping the image of the 40k universe pushes art very different to what he does.

That would be very bad for my wallet but I agree. Models like that would be beautiful. I don't know why we never got these guys.

Well they are either an early Skitarii design or an early DKOK design ... so we kinda got them just not exactly like this. :P

I for one definitely miss the older art (Karl Kopinski's art of the Black Legion led by a Daemon Prince is one of my favourite art pieces ever- it's borderline biblical in presentation), but I do think the newer art does have the occasional hidden gem. I also find the less "noticable" art like the page margin borders to be very well done and very 40K.

I wonder how much of it is a medium thing- as a wannabe artist myself I find "traditional" media such as acrylics, inks, pencils etc much easier to create more visceral works than digital. Just look at cartoons/anime made with actual ink on cel compared to digipaint too.
