Pistolero's new cult

1) Iv heard gsc is a very difficult to play army especially for a Newbie if that's true or not

I wouldn't say it's 'very difficult' per say, but they're not Space Marines. You'll inevitably take some punches before everything 'clicks' into place. In some ways though, I think they'd be quite a good army for a newbie who's willing to learn because they really make you lean on Stratagems and scramble to take advantage of what 'tricks' you can, as well as balancing risk with reward. At the end of the day though 40k isn't an especially complicated game to learn overall. One advantage that GSC has is - depending on your local meta - usually the least played army around. This means that a lot of people don't have an awful lot of experience playing against them, which makes the 'tricks' extra effective.

2) can gsc be played any other way than massed horde? Such as guard can go tanks, orks can go dread mob etc

It's very much a horde army at it's core. Everything's squishy, as even the toughest units - Aberents, etc - will melt to a determined ranged army. Mechanised builds don't appear to be unviable, it's just the cost sunk into those transports versus buying more hordes of chaff doesn't quite work as well. There's been a few builds focused around Jackals that don't seem to do half bad. The real flexibility of GSC comes from it's Tyranid and Guard allies but obviously that means leaving Mono-GSC behind. I think as time goes on we'll see more people experimenting with the Broodsurge Specialist Detachment.

3) are neophytes kitbashable without much difficulty? For example torso swaps for some uniqueness

I've seen quite a lot of swaps with the Skitari kits and some Scions. Cadian bits might work, but I think the chests on Cadians are probably too small.

4) probably a daft one this, anyway to take a knight? I know can take guard and Iv heard of a genestealer knight house before lol wishful thinking maybe :tongue.:

Afraid not. I recall seeing some rumours around they might be able to take Knights a few months prior to the 'dex, but if I remember right, that was one of the designers musing it sounded like a cool idea.

With regards to your list, I'd swap out the Jackal Alphus for a Magus. Their powers are solid and it gives you some anti-psyker defence of your own. The only thing the Alphus will really be buffing are the Mining Lasers anyway. The main thing otherwise is that I wonder if you're putting too many eggs in your Aberrant basket. I'd consider some Acolytes, maybe with Hand Flamers just because chaff-clearance is a big thing for GSC.

That depends a lot on what type of list you build. Throwing down a bunch of brood brothers and some Leman Russ' is almost as simple as an Astra Militarum army without orders, but not the most effective. There are a lot of buffs and synergies which require getting and keeping characters and units within a certain distance to each other. There are also a lot of deployment tricks which can be used to mess with the enemy.

Overall, GSC is a horde of glass cannons which uses some tricks to get close to the enemy.

The infantry horde is (currently) the most efficient build for GSC. That does not mean that vehicle based builds are bad, they're just not as strong - e.g. for the points of a goliath rockgrinder, you could get 2 neophyte squads with equipment instead. The same goes for a goliath truck with a minimum squad of acolytes vs. 2 squads of acolytes/neophytes.

As said, this does not mean vehicles are bad. Usually, you want your army to contain a bunch of bodies to stand on objectives, something hard hitting to remove the enemy from their objectives and some utility. Goliath Trucks can be usefull to carry a squad of acolytes/neophytes across the table, but the same squad could also just arrive on the other side using cult ambush.

Something to be aware of is that your enemy will use their own anti tank weaponry on your vehicles, so to get as much use as possible out of vehicles you need to run either none or multiple.

(One of) the great things about the GW model range is that parts from most non-character human kits* can be swapped between the kits, e.g. using empire free guild flagellants from AoS is a common choice for more medieval troops just as using adeptus mechanicus scitarii vanguard/rangers is a common choice for more high-tech troops.

As a side note: The brood brothers kit is actually a cadian infantry kit with an GSC upgrade sprue.

*excluding slightly larger models like space marines or necromunda goliath gangers, and ofc. easy-to-build kits

Under the current matched play rules: no.

In narrative or open play: ask your opponent (or the campaign/tournament organizer beforehand if going to an event).

The GSC-infiltrated knight house is house mortimer btw.

Not much is known about them though: https://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/House_Mortimer

Cheers for all the advice guys definitely got some stuff to mull over while the place I order from restock their neophytes :)

I might try that out using my knight as a proxy if only to get it on the table, it's my first painted model but not seen any play time since it was painted haha
