If you want a cool necron name that has some Egyptian and necron overtones read this except from an article about the original battlestar galactica series.

In the 1995-1997 comic series take on Battlestar Galactica, the Count Iblis was the catalyst for the fall of the original organic Cylon race. Count Iblis deceived the last organic Imperious Leader, named Sobekkta (Sobek being the crocodile–god of ancient Egypt), into a deal with the promise of power akin to his own. But instead, the Imperious Leader found himself transformed into a half-cybernetic being. Enraged, the Imperious Leader swore revenge upon him, firing at Count Iblis while he vanished away, laughing cruelly. As a result, the succeeding Imperious Leaders' voices all sound exactly like Count Iblis.

I came across it and was kind of impressed how such a little known bit from a different universe still had some faint necron parallels. Use sobekkta as a name for a necron if you wish.

Interestingly enough the Egyptian god sobek was associated with military prowess. That alone is a damn  good reason to reason enough to name an overlord after him....

Also sobek was associated with protective magic,  and able to turn aside evil influences or harmful spells.  Giving your warlord the trait that let's him try to deny the witch would be very fitting.

Yeah, my overlord is definitely going to be named sobekkta. . .

That's an awesome name, and BSG is an excellent reference for Necrons I'd say (though I'm not sure who inspired who if at all). As for names you've suggested a killer one but taken it for yourself, do you have any other thoughts on cool historical names? I know I've seen other people take the same course with their characters with very interesting results.

Personally I make my names up by picking a letter of the alphabet and making sounds until I'm happy, occasionally taking names from sci-fi and twisting them. It's a very scientific technique as you can imagine but I do need to watch out for similarities at times.

A more useful extension of this concept might be to create charts a la Kill Team.

Roll for a first element and a second element, combining the two elements to form a single name. If you get a result that you don’t like or which duplicates an official name, you can adjust one or both elements or portions of them to create a unique name, or you can re-roll one or both elements.

For example, if I roll 4,6,1,2 I get “Zara” for the first element and “keth” for the second element, resulting in Zaraketh.

Note that I created these charts by taking names from the 7th edition Codex: Necrons and breaking them down into two elements. I only had to make up two first elements and three second elements to have sufficient elements for two d66 tables. You can easily expand upon these tables by creating elements that follow similar patterns.

Guy i'm not going to sue you for copping a name I recommended but didn't create and I doubt the comic company would sue either.

It is kinda interesting how it has similarities to the whole necron story but the first battlestar series was written long before the necrons were written. You know "iblis" might make a good c'tan name too.

Btw i'm just trying to keep people from ending up with horrible necron names like "Tue'Tahn Ek'Ron" or "Amon Ekhron"... .

My phaeron is named after one of egypt's female pharaohs, Ha'Chept Sehnok
