Company Veterns VS Sternguard Veterans

Recommended Posts

Offensively the Sternguard are best choice for similar points. However, if you start adding in special weapon or Storm Shields and close combat weapons, the Company Veterans become a whole other prospect.

They're quite different units really. If you want to bolter enemies to death then take the special issue Bolters of Sternguard. Even with Storm Shields the Company Veterans won't do much killing with their Bolters or last particularly long in a fire fight.

I think some people like Company Veterans with Storm Shields and Storm Bolters but I'm not sold on their killing power for survivability. I could be wrong on that though.

Add 5 Melta guns or Plasma guns into the mix and those Company Veterans can put the hurt on something though.

Depends on your target really, storm bolters are better vs guardsmen and other chaff units even when taking the strategem into account (SIBs are better vs IG in cover by a miniscule amount).

So if you want to mulch guardsmen, gaunts, cultist, genestealers and similar units you're better off with Storm Bolters, at which point I would always go for Company Vets.

There hasn't been any FAQ that changed Biker riding vets to be able to intercept for anything but Characters with the Biker Keyword so sadly you're stuck saving Bikers. Unlike regular vets who can intercept for any character including  Gulliman (Monster) or Chronos (vehicle).

I don't think they can intercept for Chronos.

You’re right - sorry about that error. They are still a highly mobile fairly resilient dakka unit .

Depends on what you're doing with the units. Veterans are the best for loading up with special units and possibly slapping shields on for enhanced durability. Sternguard are obviously great because of special issue ammo and should ideally be focusing on that over taking specials.

Special issue boltguns, not ammo.

Different thing now. The ammo is Deathwatch only now, Sternguard just get better boltguns.

(I realize you are likely aware of this, I'm clarifying for anyone reading that is not aware)
