Prot
I haven’t tried that one specifically but the Vallejo Mechanicus line is quite nice. I’d be surprised if it disappointed. Aramis K
GW are about to release a new pot of matt varnish along with the contrast range. Which could be good, and may be easily available. Oxydo
I like Vallejos polyurethane matt varnish, it can be brushed or airbrushed on with a 0.4 mm needle or with some sort of thinner for a smaller one. It's waterbased too, so keeps well on a wet palette, doesn't smell, and just needs soap and water to clean the brush. Their satin varnish alternative is sadly not very satin and more of a gloss. Stoic Raptor
I just picked up a bottle of the Vallejo Mecha Matte varnish and it is every bit as good as everyone is saying. I've tried all kinds of brush-on acrylic matte varnish products (Vallejo AV Matte, Army Painter Anti-Shine, and others) and never found a satisfactory one before - most come out chalky or streaky or too shiny to be called "matte". This stuff is different - it's FANTASTIC. Get some. I bought a pot of GW Stormshield but I may never use it after finding the Mecha varnish. Lord Raven 19
Does the Vallejo one airbrush well? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/356321-dull-coat-in-a-bottle/#findComment-5334229 Share on other sites
Arkhanist
Vallejo do quite a few different varnishes. The vallejo 'acrylic' varnish doesn't have a good reputation through an airbrush, and the matt is more like satin. The mecha brand line is all designed for airbrushing, which includes the varnishes - though avoid thinning if possible, or if you do, use limited quantities of their own airbrush thinner (alcohol based thinner can turn it into gel). I use their 'polyurethane matt varnish' through the airbrush undiluted with a 0.5mm nozzle, which is a very very slightly satin matt finish (eggshell-ish) - I prefer it for power armour etc. I also have their 'premium airbrush colour' matt varnish (which is part of their line designed for RC cars) that's a very matt finish through an airbrush. The mecha and premium varnish are the same price, and slightly more expensive than the white-label polyurethane varnish, so I imagine the mecha and premium varnish are very similar if not identical in composition, just in different brand lines.
