Craftworld Iyanden - viable theme or not?

Sue me, but the new Apocalypse boxsets have tempted me. The Eldar one is jsut made to expand the SC box, and both together look like a solid base for an Iyanden theme army:

Both sets together would give me:

  • two Farseers
  • 20 Wraithguard/Wraithblades
  • 3 Wraithlord
  • 1 War Walker

I have absolutely no clue if this would make for a reasonable list, or how many points we are talking about. Would it ba an army both players can have a good game with? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Minor correction... thats 1 farseer & 1 spirtseer models

bonus is it gives you a better mix psychic powers

:tongue.:

edit - As said by Blood Raven, its missing two important parts of the Craftworlds playstyle... CP and speed.   However, An autrach, 20 guardians (with 2 support weapons) 5 rangers and 3 wave serpents sorts that out...

gives you a cheep (but useful) battalion of Autarch, farseer, and 3 troops ... put the war walker here.  Then you have the spirtseer, and your wraithX in wave serpernets supported by 3 wraithlords

Slasher956 has hit the nail on the head for me. Add 3 cheap Troops and an Autarch plus some Wave Serpents and you are good to go.

Wave Serpents plus Wraithlords is a combo I really like and find works very well (particularly since Wraithlords got a price drop in Chapter Approved).

The way I find this works best is to build the Wraithlords for speed with 2 shuricannons and a Glaive (flamers optional depending on your points). When they Advance, the Wraithlords are almost as fast as the Wave Serpents and shurican weapon is Assault meaning they can still fire after Advancing. 3 Serpents gives you nearly 40 T7 wounds behind a 3+ save and a Serpent field while 3 Wraithlords gives you a further 30 T8 wounds. Even armies that are equipped to kill Knights will not chew through all of that before they hit your lines. Don't forget the 45 T6 wounds from the Wraithguard too.

The Wraithlords form a valuable 2nd wave to back up the Wraithguard in Serpents, bail them out of assault or mow down horde opponents with shurican fire.

Your Troops keep a low profile and grab objectives while proving the CPs Eldar need to help power some of their trick. This setup is a little light on long-ranged heavy weaponry but both the Wave Serpents and War walker can be kitted out with Brightlances and/or Starcannons to threaten targets at range.

A quick 2K (1998) list with what Karhedron & myself have said....

Battalion:

HQ - Aurtach

HQ - Farseer

Troop - 10 guardians + Brightlance

Troop - 10 guardians + brightlance

Troop - 5 Rangers

Hvy Sup - Warwalker w/ 2 Brightlances

Vanguard:

HQ - Spirtseer

Elite -5 Wriathblades (ghost swords)

Elite -5 Wraithguard (D-sycthes)

Elite -5 Wraithguard (wraithcanon)

Hvy Sup - 3 x Wraithlords each with 2 Shuriken Cats & a ghostglavie

Transports - 3 x Wave Serpents with tripple Shuriken Canon, Spirt stones, star Engines & Vectored Engines

edit - you can remove the brightlances from the guardians and equip two of the wraithlords with two shuriken canons and the 3rd with just one... or you can remove the Star Engines & Vectored Engines off the wave serpents to equip all 3 with two canon... as said this is just a quick list idea :p

hrmm.....a little proxying (in wraithblade & wave serpents weapons) and I might give this list a go my self.....

I like this list. Personally I would drop the Star Engines and Vectored Engines from the Serpents to give the Wraithlords all dual shuricannons. They are decent upgrades but an extra 18 S6 shots will help more against pretty much any opponent.

You could potentially get away without 1 Wave Serpent by putting the Wraithguard with Cannons in the Webway. They are the only version that can hit a target reliably whilst coming in from Reserves. Depends of course on whether you have anything better to spend the points on.

And the multiple vehicle/Wraithlord approach really leverages the Iyanden Craftworld Attribute for things with degrading profiles. The capping morale losses at one model isn’t bad, but doesn’t matter much for MSU. Whereas having Serpents and Wraithlords that don’t lose effectiveness at all until 3 or 4 Wounds is pretty fabulous.

For $145 each on Amazon I couldn't pass it up but I now wish I had gotten Guardians instead.

Silver lining time.....

I’d make a unit of 5 of each of the different weapon options ...then once you’ve had a couple of games and can work out which is your 2 favourite types build the other 10 in them... so you can field max units :)

I mean I wish I had enough to do that!

With the wraithlords build a twin shuricanin and a cheep sword...then for the other two see about magnetising all the weapon options (sword, wrists + heavy options)

Edit - if talking about the avengers... depending on the load out you give the exarch they will always be able to pull double duties till you expand in to guardians

Thank you for the thoughts.  I have lots of little magnets, I've been knee deep in Adeptus Titanicus so I haven't had a chance to actually assemble these guys.  My original thought was using these guys as proxies for Eldar titans in AT...
