Klod
As the title says, my question is whether a model needs to move up to wall to get to a second floor. In the Main Rulebook it says that models can move in any directon, so I assume that a model can also move vertically without a surface to climb as long as it ends its movement on something it can stand on. Panzer
There are no rules for ladders or similar, so no the model doesn't have to move to the wall. As long as its movement range is enough to properly place the base on the upper level of the terrain you can put it there. Dr_Ruminahui
It does depend on the type of building. Chapter approved 2018 has the most recent rules for terrain. For ruins (p 63), it says "INFANTRY are assumed to be able to scale walls and traverse through windows, doors and portals readily. Those models can therefore move through the floors and walls of a ruin without further impediment." So, for ruins infantry models don't actually have to climb the walls - but is unclear if BEASTS and SWARMS can. For sector mechanicus terrain, the rules (p 65) are a bit different and read: "Unless they can FLY, INFANTRY, BEASTS and SWARMS must scale ladders, girders or walls to ascend or descend". So, for mechanicus terrain, models do have to have to move to a vertical component to go up or down.
