Gaming mat exact sizes

Can anyone with a 6 x 4 gaming mat tell me if the dimensions of the mat are exact or slightly off. I will be building a new table top this weekend to increase the size of the playing area and I have to settle on the exact size. I do not want to make it just over 6 x 4 to find some mats are quite a bit over.

So if you have a 6 x 4 mat is it exactly 6 x 4 or a little less or more? Or if you have built a table and have a mat have you had any issues with size?

I think you're going to want to give yourself ideally 3-4 inches of leeway on each side if you can.

Then you mark out the standard sizes if possible on the tabletop. This way you have some space to put cards (objectives and stratagems for example) dice, models that are either just about to join play or have just been removed.

I wanted to get the Deep-Cut studio Titanicus mat but I do not want to be holden to a certain maker further down the line. Three to four inches so six to eight seems quite a buffer zone. There's a picture on these forums somewhere showing a mat that has mm tolerances to its table, wish that was possible.

Found it.

I reckon itd depend on where the manufacturer is located. (US) American mats are probably pretty much exactly 6x4, other countries are probably sticking to metric approximations - so most like 180x120cm. Which is about 1.2 and .8 inches smaller. (Fractions are silly. And besides, the calculator didnt do fractions. ^^)

So I reckon 2 inches leeway should be fine.

Hey, that's my picture! I was really surprised when I saw it, thought I was in the wrong thread.

My FLGS has several tables with mats and realm of battle tiles. I believe all of them are built to be 6 x 4. Most of the tables have very little space on the long edge (as shown in the picture) but about an inch on the short edge (barely visible in the picture due to angle).

Thank you thewarriorhunter, I think an inch all-round will be enough after asking about. I was supposed to do it last weekend but my daughter decided to join the Chaos marines and I had to look after the poor girl.

Thank you all for your help in finding a good buffer size, all I have to do now is cut in a strait line...
