Vallejo Spray Cans for zenithal highlight (tests!)

Recommended Posts

After doing some tests with citadel contrast paints over metal base coats I want to try two different metal colors over a black primer as a base for my heresy era thousand sons. No airbrush, so i have to stick to rattle cans.

looking at the citadel color range I could do retributor armour (reddish gold) over leadbelcher. Has anyone any experience with such a process (for contrast paints or any other tints or transparent colors)?

I'd imagine there are silver spray colors from other companies, but i specifically wanted to do a warmer and lighter zenith metal over a leadbelcher equivalent...

general thoughts and specific feedback most welcome!

I haven't specifically tried to do a Zenithal basecoat but sometimes when I don't use as much Retributor spray over the black it can occur accidently.

here is how I do mine generally:

I could probably skip the metallic red spray step but it works for me.

currently I'm playing around with the Akhelian Green contrast over leadbelcher spray for 40k thousand sons.

thanks for the suggestions! i just ordered vallejo spray cans. fingers crossed that there is a significant difference between gunmetal and silver. The game colors from the drop bottles are rather close to each other… oh well, expensive hobby anyways.

I'll update this thread once results are in.

Vallejo Spray Paint (still quit new rattle can series) test result

Silver left and Gunmetal right. There really only is very little difference. One could only use one and try to control the paint for a nice gradient.

What i did here is GW Chaos Black primer, light dusting with Vallejo grey primer all over to lighten up the black , but maintain shadows (I want to use Contrast Paint), 45° light spray painting with Gunmetal and zenithal highlight with a sort decisive push on the silver spray cap. There sure are faster ways and you can get better results with an airbrush, but to me that looks alright for preshading.

I'm drawing a blank on this, where can you actually get the Vallejo Rattle Cans? Have been wanting to try them out since Christmas. Have found a couple of single cans on eBay and Amazon, but that's it. Am I just being blind on this?

Ebay is pretty much (to my knowledge) the only way to currently get them in UK.

I haven't managed to get them anywhere else but there is a shop on Ebay that has the whole range and didn't charge too much postage and arrived in good time. I have been very impressed with them so far as well.

Sometimes it helps to hunt around. Was looking around for these at the usual miniature modeling places and nada, zilch nothing. Randomly walk into what I think is the ONLY model train store in the city and BAM they have a full rack of the things in the back.

I've used their Blood red and bone equivalent, colour is as advertised and it goes on really smooth (climate permitting).

Originally was using the Tamiya rattle cans for my silvers/metalics as they have alot of variety to choose from, but their small size has me considering the switch to Vallejo.
