Visions of Heresy .... screws up the Fear to Tread part

Recommended Posts

Maybe I read the wrong book or took away something incorrect...

Fear to tread is the one where Sanguiness rips the wings off a blood thirster (after riding his flagship down to the planet in a crash landing)?

They were locked in the system due to Word Bearer foolery, Amit and the Boys went crazy rip and tear on the 10 random Furries sent with them "because 10 space wolves can kill a Primarch lol" like maybe if they were terminators with thunder hammers and stormshields because Loregar was being shot, point blank by a warhound titan plasma exterminator (? I think), and was badly messed up-and Angron benched the Warhounds leg as they tried to stomp Loregar to death.

So I don't have high hopes for 10 Furry Bolter Jocks.

Their whole introduction was like "man what a bunch of jerks." We're gonna come out all tacticool and stuff like 10 of us can stand up to a legion. Cool story Wolfy McVikingName.

Well I just dislike all of the overall tone here...

Yep, and the fact that 10 Marines, in the right circumstances, are a significant threat to a Primarch. Lorgar survived the plasma blast because he's the chosen son of Chaos, and had an incredibly powerful psychic shield raised. When Guilliman gets ambushed by 10 Alpha Legionnaires when he's not in armour, and realizes he's in serious trouble.

However, it also seems from one short dealing with a Watch Pack that the participants' views differed on their role. A few seem to have seen themselves as canaries or even just a formality, particularly the ones sent to Dorn.

How come Smilie never did a novel? I haven't read any of his work but it seems to be respected.

He did lot of shorts. At first they were cool, but afterwards it all becomes repetitive, unimagintive and boring. Main plot of his every FT novel get's watered down in favour of constant and unceasing descriptions of how angry FT are, and how much it takes to control the Red Thirst/Black Rage.ad nauseum. Also somtimes there are some stupid ass  elements in his writing: like during 3rd War of Armagedon, Inquisitor just takes an Imperator Titan! from the active warzone, during the battle,  because "inquisition can do whatever they want" just to escort her to some abandoned mine. And not to mention his FT origins full novels (Flesh of Cretecia, and other, limited edition I can't recall it's name) leave a question of how FT actually survived to 41stmillenium, because their rage is turned up to 11 in these books.

I sort of wish they'd release a classic Visions of Heresy edition alongside the new one. While the art is certainly the main draw of the books, I tracked down the old 4 Visions books just to have a record of the Heresy before the novels came about. It's pretty interesting to see (like the aforementioned FtT stuff) what got an overhaul and what didn't. I get that they want to push the novels, but come on guys, don't pull a Lucas on us.

It does, of course, make the decision to keep the old Signus lore even more confusing. You're going to give us Imperium Secundus but not Sanguinius v Ka'Bandha round 2? I haven't read the new edition but I'd imagine stranger lore than that was packaged into this one (especially if they kept Curze keeping Vulkan in a maze).

I absolutely agree with that. The newer editions of Visions ought to have the narratives changed to reflect the present 'canonical' stance of the Heresy. Even so, taking into account the minor inconsistencies between the Horus Heresy series and Visions, I think there's a lot to enjoy and admire in Visions. The artwork has been a major help to me in getting a 'feel' for the setting of the Heresy, and the pieces included are quite good for the most part. On that note, perhaps reworking the text for Visions is a larger problem than we realize, because it would concurrently exclude / force the reformatting of certain art pieces in the book? Just a thought.
