Beatnik cryptek
I saw that my local evilmart had life sized Styrofoam heads on sale at a fairly low price. Like these. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Mannequin-Styrofoam-Foam-Male-Manikin-Head-Model-Wig-Glasses-Hat-Display-Stand/113104329504?_trkparms=aid=222007&algo=SIM.MBE&ao=2&asc=20160323102634&meid=372bdb794bec413e8983d9e5bb4f7c06&pid=100623&rk=4&rkt=6&sd=283183990766&itm=113104329504&pg=2047675&_trksid=p2047675.c100623.m-1&redirect=mobile I was thinking of using some thick paint to fill in the Styrofoam texture and making some sort of terrain out of them. Maybe imperial saints or governors. Possibly damage them (with firecrackers possibly? Illegal? Schmillegal!) And pain them up to look like stone or metal. I suppose you could add a bionic eye or head cables. Cool terrain idea for an imperial city or what? PeteySödes
I actually dig the idea of that but doing them up in an Eldar or other ancient xenos race. Hell, even a pacified great crusade site. Very cool idea! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/357119-strange-terrain-idea/#findComment-5346207 Share on other sites
Brother Tyler
Those styrofoam wig head models are typically very large - as large as a normal person's head. So they'll dominate most game boards. That's okay when playing something like Apocalypse, but if you're playing a smaller game (like normal WH40K), you'll probably only need one. Instead of paint, use wood filler or similar products that are available at your local DIY/hardware store. Also, you'll want to add more details to the heads in order to make them look like plausible statues. Augmetics work fine, but things like hair, headgear, jewelry, modified features, etc. will go a long way toward making them actually look like statues commemorating someone. You can use textured paint (available at local DIY/hardware stores) if you want to achieve a rough stone look. Just be sure to carefully cover all of the styrofoam before you use any spray paint on it, though, as the propellant in aerosol cans will cause the styrofoam to disintegrate. Kierdale
A great idea! My local craft shop has them too but I had never thought of using them for terrain! As Brother Tyler said, make sure you coat them well before painting them (if using spray cans). If they’re very damaged you could always put (removable) walkways between them. Platforms made from junk as settlers have taken over these old ruins... old git
At the risk of angering the mods, I've used one to make Jedda style terrain for Star Wars Legion. I covered it in sheets of newspaper and PVA to cover the texture of the Styrofoam. The beauty of it is, to look like ancient, ruined statuary, I cut it in half and voila, two pieces of scenery. Evil Eye
That's not a bad idea actually, as mentioned they are pretty large but for a centrepiece it'd be great. If you have one I'd recommend priming it by airbrush to save on coating the thing first, as for some reason airbrush primers don't dissolve polystyrene like cans do. old git
That's 'cos rattle cans aren't water based paints and have a solvent as part of the make up, which dissolves polystyrene easily.
