Xenith
Hi all, I'm going to be doing some moving soon and want to get a sturdy storage/transport solution to move my displayed models around in one piece. The key large-ish models I want to transport will be a Sicaran Venator, dreads on 60mm bases, Trygon, Carnifex, Stormhawk. Other things are several predator chassis tanks. I'm looking at the Citadel Crusade Case XL as the stardard option, with larger foam at the bottom for more room, and I can still pile infantry in. The case will be transported by truck to the next location, so doesnt have to be hand/hold luggage level durable. I'm wondering what peoples experiences are with other systems like PACK? I ahve a few KR cases, but they seem good for smaller models. I don't want a single case for only 2 tyranid monsters, for example. Any thoughts, experiences, or preferences are more than welcome! Cheers, Xen Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/357213-best-figure-case-to-transport-large-models/ Share on other sites
Halandaar
I'm looking at the Citadel Crusade Case XL as the stardard option, with larger foam at the bottom for more room, and I can still pile infantry in. Does the XL version have different foam? I have the non-XL Crusade Case and while it's absolutely excellent for infantry-sized models, I find it next to useless for anything bigger than a Dreadnought. XL Case has the same foam, it's just bigger/deeper than the Crusade Case. Remember: GW Said it's big enough to fit FOUR Knights in it at once. RikuEru
May I point you towards Feldherr products? They have a wide range of foam, especially I'd recommend the plug yourself foam. They also make pre-cut foam for different boardgames/collections! (Or stuff like Magnus, mortarion - there could be one for Tyranids too) And by now you don't have to buy the heavy expensive cases anymore. The Storage boxes are quite sturdy and should be enough to bring your collection to your best buddy or nearest store. I've looked quickly at the XL and think the bottom layer is the same size as the entire case for super large models - need to double check this though! May I point you towards Feldherr products? Self.pluck might also work, but I'm a fan of universal cases so I can display one army in a cabinet the transport another, etc. I'll take a look at feldherr! Halandaar
I've looked quickly at the XL and think the bottom layer is the same size as the entire case for super large models - need to double check this though! XL Case has the same foam, it's just bigger/deeper than the Crusade Case. Remember: GW Said it's big enough to fit FOUR Knights in it at once. I don't doubt that the case could physically fit them in, it looks big, the problem would be the foam. Check out this image of it in use (not mine); http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/4/5/701994_sm-.jpg That Land Raider takes up a whole tray to itself because of the way the foam is arranged. Luckily its a pretty flat model so you could still stack one of the "inner" trays full of infantry on top of it. With something like a knight, it would bulge out over the top and then you have to flip the smaller tray upside down and pack it around the front of the Knight. Using this method, you could fit 4 Knights in a standard size Crusade case, but that would be it. Something like a Baneblade probably wouldn't fit at all, it's have to sit on top of the foam channels. I guess the only way to know for sure is for somebody to actually open one up and see if that bottom tier has a different foam arrangement. If it does, it's a winner, because the overall quality of the case is good and the foam is really good for smaller models. Tyriks
I don't have the xl but my crusade case is my least favorite miniatures case. Feldherr stuff is good (especially on a budget; I got one case a month while we were house shopping and preparing to move) for small stuff. The Battlefoam PACK has worked well for bigger stuff for me. MegaVolt87
I have always been very happy with battlefoam, would recommend that. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/357213-best-figure-case-to-transport-large-models/#findComment-5348907 Share on other sites
Lord Marshal
Citadel cases are, like most Games Workshop product, overpriced and pretty rubbish. I found KR a good, cheaper alternative to Battlefoam, who are arguably better quality, but more expensive. KR did the job fine for me before I moved on to magnetising my models to trays for avoiding breakages. If you're trying to fit monsters with infantry, that might be a good solution. NTaW
I've seen magnet trays used to transport Tyranid monsters and associated gribbles. Worked great with no pressure points for thin extremities compared to foam I've seen others delicately work their models in and out of. Not that foam isn't great, I use it and it has saved my army countless times, but it has its drawbacks in size and potential pressure points. The Unseen
I'll throw in another recommendation for KR. Their foam is soft and kinda squishy, so models with smaller protruding bits don't break off as much, and they have custom cut foam for different factions models, which includes stuff like dreadnought shaped slots or knights. VanDutch
Tabletop Tyrant do some great build your own cases with a variety of trays. There is a range of sizes too. Jack Burton
It might be worth looking into cases for camera equipment or other such professional uses. You can probably find something WAY more durable than you can get through GW for a comparable price. Just with a quick search on Amazon, I found this frankly enormous case that you could probably drop off the back of your truck in freezing weather, and come back the next day and find intact minis inside. https://www.amazon.com/Monoprice-Weatherproof-Shockproof-Hard-Wheels/dp/B00SSF9DIE/ref=pd_cp_421_2?pd_rd_w=Ov6eb&pf_rd_p=ef4dc990-a9ca-4945-ae0b-f8d549198ed6&pf_rd_r=4N1YBMMPWRGTZH68F0YR&pd_rd_r=ca9e4ece-a70f-41ab-96ae-bec4143a78a9&pd_rd_wg=NVwHA&pd_rd_i=B00SSF9DIE&psc=1&refRID=4N1YBMMPWRGTZH68F0YR Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/357213-best-figure-case-to-transport-large-models/#findComment-5350319 Share on other sites
Sky Potato
Pelicases are generally the gold standard for indestructible cases. I’ve got loads - I basically lived out of one for 6 months earlier this year. They can be had second hand on eBay for relatively good prices as well. They aren’t really geared toward mini storage though - they do have pick and pluck foam, but it’ll be deep. Too deep for your average 32mm/40mm/60mm based model. If you could get custom foam knocked up by KR, Battlefoam, Tabletop Tyrant etc, then they’d be great. I’ve used a Pelican 1450 case for mode storage before I got a load of KR stuff, and had to bodge some foam trays from eBay in there. I couldn’t find any foam trays anywhere that were sized to fit a pelicase. For the price though, I think you’d be better off just buying directly from one of the foam companies I just mentioned above. Xenith
Thanks all! It doesn't have to be super indestructable - I found this on Feldherr which I think I'll look at getting! https://www.feldherr.net/feldherr-bags/feldherr-maxi-plus/feldherr-maxi-plus-bag-for-tanks-monsters-and-75-miniatures/a-59063 It might be worth looking into cases for camera equipment or other such professional uses.
