Sanguinary guard have arrived!

Recommended Posts

They have arrived and shall soon live to serve the emperor, planned load-out:

1. two encarmine axes

2. three encarmine swords

3. four angelus bolt guns, one inferno pistol

Any recommended tips or strategy then please share,

For the Emperor and Sanguinius! Death! DEATH!

Love the sanguinary guard, hate the cost of their encarmine weapons. 16 points for axes!

Think swords look best, but fists are the best value.

I always run mine with some boost to attacks (normally warlord sanguinor) but an unleash rage psychic power works in a pinch. Without extra attacks, they just don’t do enough.

My area is casual enough to let me run them all as "power fists" despite them being a mix of the swords/axes.

Because 12 pts for a force sword is too much, and 16 for a force axe is just insane.

I would love it if they were just treated as relic blades though, that would be perfect.

For me though, plasma pistols are too risky for such expensive models.

I run mine, as I said, all with fists, and then a 50/50 split of Angelus boltguns and inferno pistols.

Nothings funnier than shooting magnus' face off with a bunch of melta pistol shots.

And for 2 pts more than a pp, I always go melta.

The price for encarmine weapons is too high but the price for fully kitted out SG seems about right for how they tend to perform for me on the table. I have a hunch that the price for the basic SG is too low and the EWs are overpriced to bring it back in line. When you consider that an SG is practically a flying Terminator but 3 points cheaper. The Terminator's 5++ only becomes relevant against AP-4 or higher.

If SG were the same price as Terminators (effectively trading the 5++ for their jump packs) but EWs were 3 points cheaper, I don't think the discrepancy would look so obvious.

Of course at the end of the day, this does emphasise why SG are best with PFs currently (especially as they should normally have rerolls).

A very nice trick to make your charges shorter is rezzing a dead model with a priest and placing him closer within coherency and closer to your charge target.

You can get an extra 3" with this trick (2" coherency and 32 mm base) making a 9"inch charge after upon wings of fire a 6" inch charge.

You will have to plan ahead with your priest, so always give him a jump pack, and it only works when you have a unit with unwounded models, but could make a huge difference in saving you 2 cp for the 3d6 charge.
