The use of Nurglings in matched play deathguard detachments

Hi all,

I know this question have been asked many times and in many different ways.

However in every topics that I found one thing seems to remain in suspend and with many different divergent opinions: What are we exactly loosing/winning by using nurglings as our mandatory troop choices in a death guard detachment.

It is not a secret that as death guards if we want to keep the points low the only available choices are poxwalkers or cultists.

But we also have the nurglings in our codex as troop choice (which many players forget because it is not the case for regular chaos and I think a lot misunderstanding comes from that).

I saw many people saying that the only way to make them work in a deathguard detachment is by summoning.

I would like to know if I understand it the right way (it is important for a list that I want to make for tournament).

Let's make a example list: (2 daemon princes, 2 bloat drones, 3 nurglings swarm units (all taken from the deathguard codex))

The way I see it is that we can definitely take them as our troop choices for a 5 cp detachment the only restriction being to have at least one faction keyword in common (which they do with at least Chaos, Nurgle, and Daemon as common faction keywords).

This will also be a legit battle forged army all taken as part of the deathguard codex so we should have access to the codex stratagems right?

However pretty much every codexes have 2 rules that comes on the top (the faction specific special rule and the rule that allows troop choices to contest objectives no matter their unit number).

These are only available to faction specific keywords (such as inexorable advance and plaguehost for deathguard but every army have their own).

The 2 daemon prince, 2 bloat drone and nurglings do not have the Deathguard in common because the nurglings do not have it.

So that means that this detachment will not be able to benefit from the inexorable advance and plaguehost rule right?

So to sum up if I include nurglings in a deathguard army that is a legit battle forged army which does not have the DEATHGUARD army keyword

so I get the command points and the stratagems but not the factions special rules am I right?

You wont get the deathguard specific rules but they are pretty useless anyway. Unless you are planning on taking Plague Marines, Blightlord terminators or shooty dreadnought it does nothing, other than give you objective secured.

You will still get the +5CP.

Ask youself this though..why not just take nurgle daemon and ally in deathguard detachments?

Unfortunately, right now, except for a few specific situations, deathguard as an pure army are just pointless. Its not that they are bad, its just that you can do much better when allied in

"You will still get the +5CP."    And access to the deathguard codex stratagem right?

I think it is that specific point that is the most contested and never directly adressed.

"Ask youself this though..why not just take nurgle daemon and ally in deathguard detachments?"

I usually do just that. but for a 1000 pts tournament that I try to build a list for every point matters and I don't really see the point into using a second daemon HQ (the poxbringer being the only one I'm looking for)

On the other hand in deathguard the daemon prince is really good and have access to great relics and the bloat drones can be quite good in small games.

A Deathguard detachment is a detachment that contains only keyword Deathguard units, this is explained in the introductory text above the inexorable advance rule. Adding in daemons without that keyword disqualifies the detachment regardless of what codex the unit comes from.

Stratagems are unlocked by having at least one pure Deathguard detachment. In the regular Chaos Space marine book its possible to have a mixed legion detachment that doesn't get legion traits but does unlock stratagems but Deathguard is a mono-legion codex so there's no way to get stratagems but not the legion trait (the Chaos Space marine book also contains daemon datasheets that disqualify detachments). If you have multiple detachments you can still use deathguard stratagems on units with the right keywords outside of the right detachment.

Nugling deployment options however are very powerful. They can absolutely claim some objectives early an be a nuisance to shift.

I would never put them in a Death Guard Detachment, but I'd take a nurgle daemon allied battalion instead.
