Conversion advice for newbies.

Recommended Posts

This post is copied from another location. It's so good I put it here.

Hey guys, do you want to know the best piece of advice to give when someone asks you what's the best way to do conversions on models?

My view is that it's "Get started."

Seriously, I'm waiting (and waiting and waiting and waiting and waiting. But at least I bought from a place selling it at a discount instead of gw full price.) for my new necron box to arrive and since I have wraiths coming out my ass due to some good sales, I decided to convert the wraiths in it to destroyers of which I currently have 0.

Destroyers are in demand so never really on sale and I don't like the destroyer models, too clunky looking, like a 50's scifi image.

My plan was to leave the wraith tail off, stick the beamer in the tail socket to suggest a propulsion node or maybe a stabilizer that allows the destroyer to move and fire heavy weapons without penalty. I put a deathmark head in the big eye of a wraith faceplate with the smaller ones around it, make a gauss cannon out of unused gauss blasters from my immortals and viola!

I may re arrange the legs and those things with the spheres at the ends too, then put it on a destroyer flying base.

I planned to use a wraith scythe arm for a front arm and put the converted gauss cannon on the other big arm ball and socket, which i wasn't quite happy with as it would still look too much like a wraith.

But F it, i need destroyers, the current models are too expensive and i don't like the look of them, and I can grab 6 wraiths i don't need at a great discount and have immortal parts left over, so it's a convertin' I'm gonna be a doin'.

(If you're a GW wonk already spraining his neck by sticking his nose waay up in the air and sneering at how you'd never allow this and I should shut up and buy the destroyer models i don't like and are too expensive, please note this thread is easily exited and you should do so now.)

Well I decided to start on the Gauss cannon conversion to I broke out my unused immortal parts. I quickly made the base conversion, still needs work and I'm not sure what to use as a barrel yet.

I still wasn't too happy about using a wraith scythe as another arm and was brooding on that when I saw a few things.

The left arms from the immortals and deatmarks.

The clenched fists from the upper grips of the gauss blasters.

the discarded blades from the gauss blasters.

Hmmm, putting those together resulted in a decent sized necron arm, not as big as a official destroyer's, but one holding a wicked looking knife, which kinda fits in the destroyer meme pretty nicely.

So yeah, I had an idea, but wasn't fully happy with it, bit i went ahead and got cutting and as i had all those parts in front of me my creativity nodes started cogitating and, well, i came up with a better idea than I started with.

So I say if you've got an urge to do a conversion and have a few ideas, even if they aren't perfect yet, just break out the parts and the tools and get cutting. Having the parts in front of you might stimulate your creativity nodes you might find you are actually coming up with better ideas than you started with as you're working.

That's just my advice for new phaerons out there. If you're a vet and consider this post a waste of your time, well, i'm helping the newbies. If you're a GW wonk outraged at me for not mindlessly paying GW's prices for models I don't think that much of but are useful units, enjoy your outrage and offense along with the sense of smug superiority buying GW's minis gives you.
