Is Kill Team dead?

The original release stuff doesn't seem to be available anymore. I know we had Elites a while ago, but if people can't get into the game with access to the strategems that come with the boxes, it doesn't seem like a good thing for people starting off. Or are GW expecting that people will just grab whatever and start from the core book only?

While I don't play it myself (for the most part), I have observed quite a few people picking it up in my area. Of course, I have a GW store, which might have something to do with it, but it is not dying--indeed it seems to be growing.

I can't really answer the rest of your questions but I think it is surviving despite any attempts GW may or may not have made to remove support for it (which I doubt they want to do--after all, it sells 40k models, which GW always wants more of).

Elites just came out like 2 months ago (Mid-May I want to say) and White Dwarf just came out for rules for Daemons and Eisenhorn this month. I wouldn't say it is dead, I would say they are very bad at keeping the boxed kill teams and terrain in stock, which is very disappointing.

Kill Team isn't dead, it's just a niche game so it will never be as popular as main 40k. Mainly because people who also play main 40k have a whole lot of models they'd like to put on the table which aren't for Kill Team like tanks, flyers, bikes and stuff.

Kill team is not dead.

The starter set is not really required to play kill team.

I always saw the starter are for those who play boardgames that allows people to get into the hobby at a good price point.

I have played games using a summary sheet with the "strategems" so the kill team cards are not really necessary. I play usually casual.

Me and a Buddy also just got into the Game. I was lucky to have bought a copy of the Starter Box last year, but we haven't used any of the Stuff from there, except for the Mechanicus Kill Team and the Dice, hehe. And we have an active league in our local meta.

I personnally expect to see a kind of Kill Team "Almanach" (like the one of Blood Bowl or like Chapter Approved) at the end of the year, combining rules from previous products (like the Missions from the unavialable Killzones and the like …).

I can't speak for any other areas, but one of the local stores that I frequent had a Kill Team even this passed Wednesday, and we had over 15 people there. Plus 3 new players that were there to learn that ended up picking up the core Rule Book. So our community overall continues to grow as does the following. The ability to make an army that you always wanted but didn't have time to do on a larger scale, really has a draw for a lot of people including myself.

Personally I think the game is fantastic, and has it's own unique feel so it will continue to be successful. The Kill Team of the past was a joke to me, and just felt like 40K on a boring small scale with no individuality. The current rules set lets you really feel like you are fielding a unit of mighty heroes with the specializations, strategems, and the ability to soak up wounds. The campaign functionality also adds a whole nother dynamic to the game.

So, as for myself and the group of individuals I play with regularly, we love Kill Team and will continue to play it. Most of us discuss adding Kill Teams almost weekly.

I don't think we'll see more expansion books like commanders and elites. I think we'll see new rogue trader esque boxes. What I would like to see most is a campaign expansion book with more in depth campaign rules and missions.

And I would like a book that allows us to create our own Rogue Traders and Inquisitors and their retinues, rather than the fixed datasheets and rosters we are limited to at current. That may have to await a similar release for main 40K, though.

Idk. Around here folks meet up at 3 different locations as many times a week and there are usually a half to a full dozen players at those meetups. That is seperate from the normal 40k/30k groups that might pick up some KT games on their nights.
