Requiem's Necron WIP

Hey guys, so I started necrons about two weeks ago, I was planning another project entirely but had to clean out some of my models to get to things when I found a cache of necron models. I had completely forgotten about. You see back when I was playing every weekend and traveling at least once a month for tourney events. I was putting every penny of prize money and every win directly into a necron army that I was going to play. Necrons were in about the same place they are now as far as competitiveness and I am a huge fan of breaking the meta and playing off the wall armies. Time went on and I stepped away from the hobby. I tried coming back a few times but the game just wasnt the same. A lot of the folks who I had met had moved on and I just didn't connect with a lot of the new folks.

Recently a group of friends got back into the game and have been playing and it has reinvigorated my desire to break into the hobby again, I got this amazing idea to make a Fallen Angel army and include all kinds of different things, only to find that a FAQ had been dropped that crushed my army idea. So with my tail between my legs I began to work on a smaller scale idea with the fallen angels. It felt a bit empty and having tripped over all the Necron stuff it got me thinking... No one here locally really plays them, they aren't considered a meta or powergame army. What can I do to make them work? Can I make an army of necron warriors supported by 3+ reanimation protocals and throw everyone off. I began reading and digging out things and just building my brains out.

So far the biggest struggle has been the 60 warriors. I am big on cleaning sprues, cleaning mold lines, and then building the model itself. My dumb self, clipped 12 warriors from the sprues completely, cleaned them up, and then spent forever putting them together because the arms wouldnt match up. Once i finally fixed the problem, I moved on to another set of models being turned off by the idea of building 48 more warriors. So far I am about a week or so in of a few hours every day and I have started getting some things together. This weekend I clipped the warriors, cleaned their legs, built their torso and will clean them up and put them on bases/glue them together here in the next few days.

I am pretty sure I am going with the Sahtek dynasty but I am not 100% sold on this. I have thrown a lot of different paint schemes together in my head just to add some character to the army on the table but haven't locked anything down yet. I also havent decided on the bases. What direction do I want to take them, do I want to do a mars planet? Maybe do a throw back to old school flock, snow, a field, I still dont know. One idea i had was sand, but not like you normally see sand on mini bases. Do something like sand dunes, with ridges and foot prints, but I will lock that down as it comes closer and closer to time that it matters.

The goal, I plan on getting these babies built, painted, on the table, and actually get back out there playing and I want to do it my way. Play some janky lists or silly fun lists. The world's gates are open and I want to try it all. Hope you like my WIP stuff so far, here is what i have.

So as of tonight this is my progress. I figured it was time to drop my first post. Give some folks something to look out, more formally introduce myself to the community and get this goal on the road. Thank you all for checking in and seeing my progress, there will be tons more to come!

Welcome :happy.: ,

Great to see someone rekindling an old dream... Wow!! though that's a lot to clean up and put together

I'm so happy to see someone else who simply wants to play a Monolith just for the fun of it!!

I gotta say im sooo jealous of the amount you have in front of you :biggrin.:

again, welcome to the Forum of Dynasties, an overlord will be along shortly to give you a proper welcome...

Look forwards to seeing this army painted up!,

Cheers, Mithril

  That is an absolute tonne of grey. Are you considering the new contrast paints to help speed up the process or the tried and true silver spray with nuln oil approach?

ahem...wait a second.

Welcome to the Crypts, fellow Phaeron. It would seem your legions have survived the eons well despite being in need of some (re)assembly.

Warriors (and a lot of Necron stuff for me) can be a bit tiresome to build. If it isn't the cheek sprue connections it's the fiddly arms or "oops I hunched it again" pose. For all infantry I've adopted assembly in batches following the legs > torso > arms > head process. Anything else has resulted in grey hairs and a stalled interest in model assembly on my end.

When it comes to Dynasty I was less inclined to paint an established theme, coming from 20+ years painting Blood Angels, so I went with what I like and choose what Code works best for my Detachments. Playing with multiple Codes represented in a list is common enough among players trying to get a competitive edge, but if there was one choice to rule them all it would be Sautekh 100%. While we no longer can get down to 3+ RP rolls (oh, Decurions) it's all about the +1's to hit buffing tesla these days. Using an Overlord/Catacomb Command Barge/Imotekh for the My Will Be Done/Wave of Command ability combined with the Methodical Destruction stratagem one can achieve 4+ tesla rolls.

Also, Monoliths rock. They're an icon of Necron lore and look regardless of what the current rules offer them. Those are in constant flux now anyway with two game-wide FAQs and a Chapter Approved book every year.

I look forward to seeing your progress!

  • 2 weeks later...

Its been a short bit since I have updated and I have been a busy little beaver. Work has been pretty nuts lately so by the time I make it home, spend time with the family, and build a bunch of stuff I wasn't even thinking about updating this. I did not forget to take pictures of progress.

@mithrilforge Thank you for the warm welcome. I appreciate it and hope that in this WIP thread I can make my dream come to life!

@NTaW SOOOO much grey. It is daunting, truthfully. I have used platemail spray from army painter with good results on my iron warrior army. Shake well. Thank you for the warm welcome, I will do my dynasty proud! I came up with a system for myself as well, clip/clean legs, glue to the base. clip clean chest/head, glue together. Glue legs/chest/head. Next is arms.. I really want to do something special with my monolith, make it a centerpiece. Not sure what i am going to do with the monolith yet, add electronics? paint it in some super amazing way? i dunno.

THE WIP

Legs

So I began by gluing all the warrior legs to the bases and got them ready for their torso parts. Super excited to have gotten this far when a friend of mine on teamspeak reminds me that warrior legs are no longer on 25mm bases...... They come with 32mm bases now.... Son of a.....

Order Ring

I tracked down some rings that you attach to the base. Pretty simple system, these were the cheapest I could find at $22 per 100 base extenders. Whew.. Crisis averted. I am a stickler for making sure my stuff is all "up to code" if you will.

Cron bods

Probably backwards from what most folks do. I glued the heads to my torsos and gave each one a slight turn, tilt, or raise to add some variety. I figure that when I place the torso/head on the body I can use the stance of the legs to decide the facing of my necron. Having already built 12, I have a good idea of what options come on the arms. Patiently waiting on my base extenders to arrive.

CronsNeed newbase

I begin gluing the torso/head to the legs and posing them... Feels like I am getting closer to done with these buggers.

FineCryptek

Getting real tired of warriors. Opted to change things up a bit and pound my head against a different wall. Finecast.... Isn't the greatest.. I hate this stuff. its rubbery, its dirty, it has tons of mold lines and I really feel like it loses a lot of detail because of all the injection locations. not to mention all that flash.... yuck.

Cryptek sprue1

Cryptek sprue2

Going to build this guy too. It shocks me how clean this sprue is. Mold lines are minimal, I can look at it and see where all the parts go easily. Going to build these two Crypteks together.

FineCryptek done

Powered through all the cleaning and got this guy built pretty quickly. He DOES NOT fit on his base very well. Between his "tail" and his malformed legs, I am probably going to have to be creative for basing this fella. You can see the plastic Cryptek in the background, still not glued to the base. I did not glue him to his cloak so that I can paint him in two pieces.

Ring Arrive

Got home from work today, my wife throws a box at me, it was time to finish all the warriors.

Bods Legs done

Bods Legs done2

Bods Legs done3

Alright all the warriors are built, on their 25mm bases and are ready for the base upgrades. *throws up a little* I do not recommend building 48 of the same model ever...

Rings Clipped

Trying Rings

Clipped off the sprue easily and tried one out. It looks uneven but that is because I have it on a piece of paper that isnt flat. Once I applied glue and squeezed it together, the problem was solved.

RingVSnoring

RingVSnoring2

Took a few comparison shots. The models look so much better on the 32mm bases. Their feet no longer hang off the edges and they just look as though they are intended.

Crons Newbase2

Crons Newbase

All the bases have been upgraded.. 70 models + have fancy new 32mm bases.. 60 warriors, 5 immortals, finecast cryptek, Imotekh, 5 lychguard. All glory.

Wondering what you guys did for your monoliths? It looks like at a minimum I am going to have to paint it in sub assembly to get it painted well. I am also wondering about basing these guys. Starting to think about red sand or something that will pop or have high contrast with all the metalics and green acrylic rods. Hope you guys like what ya see and please, comments and criticism are always welcome!

Tune in next time for the completion of the Necron Warriors, Lychguard, Doomsday Ark, and the Command Barge/Annihilation Barge.

Well done bud, i'm putting together 20 of the blighters at the moment so i understand your pain (a wee bit :tongue.: i only have 20).

With my warriors i closely follow your steps...legs on base ,torso then i get the arms and weapons ready(i cut mine so the rod isn't used see pic below) and glue them on then lastly i put the head on relative to how the arms and body face...

med_gallery_9146_583_732617.jpg

Are those base extenders from Eccentric mini's?... i might have to get some for my first 60 or so warriors i did years ago :ohmy.:

In regards to the monolith ... i put it together in parts, painted all the insides of where the rods went first then put said rods in if required and covered them neatly with tamiya tape and then finshed putting it all together (i left the door portal off as it does not need to be glued in,it slides into place snugly without need of glue) then i basecoated it completely with spray primer...

then wrecked it with sand and PVA on some crazy idea of a sand covered monolith rising out of slumber...here is a pic of it in the process of being cleaned up for this years ETL paint challenge...

med_gallery_9146_583_941771.jpgmed_gallery_9146_583_124998.jpg

* note- you can see where i removed the large rods to clean it up, i did not glue them in that i painted it silver to try and get a slight brightness behind the rod...

anyways when next you see this it will be shades of metal and some gold accents ...hopefully :laugh.:

Good luck with your Army building  Look forwards to seeing paint on em!

Cheers, Mithril
