The space marine small detachment challenge!

Hi all!
So after painting around 3500 p of dark angels I got a little tired and came up with this idea:
To paint as many playable and tactically efficient small detachments as possible. For me this will include both codex astartes and non  codex chapters, but I think this is the best forum to post in. Please join me with your own suggestions!

Consider:
Keep the model count as low as possible.
Coolness
Points effectiveness
Tactical effectiveness.

Maybe we could try to follow this format:

Name of detachment
List
Comments (like how to play or fluff etc)
Picture

We should of course also discuss and give feedback to others ideas, but maybe it becomes easier to read if we post feedback in separate posts?

I'll start:

++ Patrol Detachment (Imperium - Blood Angels) [10 PL, 179pts] ++

+ HQ +

Captain [6 PL, 124pts]: Jump Pack, Storm shield, Thunder hammer

+ Troops +

Scout Squad [4 PL, 55pts]
. Scout: Combat knife
. Scout: Combat knife
. Scout: Combat knife
. Scout: Combat knife
. Scout Sergeant: Bolt pistol, Chainsword

Comment:
In points a cheap way to field a smash captain, but costs a lot of CP if you want to use him fully.

++ Outrider Detachment +1CP (Imperium - Space Wolves) [9 PL, 169pts] ++

+ HQ +

Wolf Lord [6 PL, 124pts]: Jump Packs, Storm shield, Thunder hammer

+ Fast Attack +

Cyberwolves [1 PL, 15pts]: Cyberwolf

Cyberwolves [1 PL, 15pts]: Cyberwolf

Cyberwolves [1 PL, 15pts]: Cyberwolf

Comment: If you pair this detachment with Dark angels you can get two good smash captains with the "lion and the wolf" stratagem. If not you can run a wolf lord on thunderwolf for more coolness. Three lone cyberwolves running around taking objectives also has its use i think.

++ Patrol Detachment (Imperium - Deathwatch) [14 PL, 168pts] ++

+ HQ +

Watch Captain [5 PL, 78pts]: Chainsword, Storm Bolter

+ Troops +

Veterans [9 PL, 90pts]
. Veteran: Storm Bolter
. Veteran: Storm Bolter
. Veteran: Storm Bolter
. Veteran: Storm Bolter
. Watch Sergeant: Storm Bolter

Comment: With special issue ammuntion and the right stratagems i think these storm bolters can output some nasty firepower.

++ Patrol Detachment (Imperium - Space Marines) [15 PL, -1CP, 247pts] ++

+ No Force Org Slot +

**Chapter Selection**: Raven Guard

Specialist Detachment [-1CP]: Indomitus Crusaders

+ HQ +

Captain [5 PL, 77pts]: Master-crafted boltgun

+ Troops +

Intercessor Squad [10 PL, 170pts]: Bolt rifle
. 9x Intercessor
. Intercessor Sergeant

Comment: A bit CP hungry but these can also provide a lot of firepower. I'm unsure about the chapter though. Raven guard sure adds some resilience.

This one is more rule of cool than points/tactical efficiency but would be fun to paint.

++ Supreme Command Detachment +1CP (Imperium - Space Marines) [27 PL, 401pts] ++

+ No Force Org Slot +

**Chapter Selection**: Black Templars

+ HQ +

Chaplain Grimaldus [6 PL, 90pts]

High Marshal Helbrecht [9 PL, 150pts]

The Emperor's Champion [4 PL, 75pts]

+ Elites +

Sword Brethren (Company Veterans) [8 PL, 86pts]

. Space Marine Veteran: Bolt pistol, Chainsword

. Space Marine Veteran: 2x Lightning Claw

. Space Marine Veteran: Bolt pistol, Chainsword

. Space Marine Veteran: Bolt pistol, Chainsword

. Veteran Sergeant: Bolt pistol, Power sword

++ Total: [27 PL, 401pts] ++

Another cool one and a good way to get a leviathan on the table without too many taxes:

++ Patrol Detachment (Imperium - Space Marines) [31 PL, 620pts] ++

**Chapter Selection**: Red Scorpions

+ HQ +

Carab Culln the Risen [18 PL, 360pts]: The Imperium's Sword, Warlord

Casan Sabius [8 PL, 175pts]

+ Troops +

Intercessor Squad [5 PL, 85pts]: Auxiliary Grenade Launcher, Bolt rifle

. 4x Intercessor

. Intercessor Sergeant

++ Total: [31 PL, 620pts] ++

I went with intercessors over the other troops as this detachment really want to be getting in close to make the most of the leviathan and intercessors are the best (of a bad bunch) combat troops.

Spearhead: Phobos Captain and 3 Eliminator squads.

All can target characters and all can deploy outside your deployment zone.

If you use Mortis rounds on the Eliminators you have 9 shots that can target characters with no line of sight, hitting on 2s and rerolling 1s with the Captain nearby.

And the whole detachment is under 500 points. Best run as Raven Guard to combine the -1 to hit with the +2 to saves from cover (you are putting them in cover, right?).

Ahh, I like the premise!

When I was running Imperial Knights & an Astra Militarium Brigade I started painting up this detachment as an Anti-Psyker tool, and to also have a Smash Captain on hand without burning all my CP. I think the BT version is the best budget Smash Captain you can get - for 5cp you get 12 attacks (RR1's, 6's count as 2 hits, RR all wounds, RR failed charges). You can also get a 5+++ for a fight phase for 1cp - which could be useful.

++ Patrol Detachment (Imperium - Space Marines) [12 PL, -2CP, 179pts] ++

+ No Force Org Slot +

**Chapter Selection**: Black Templars

Specialist Detachment [-1CP]: Black Templars Sword Bretheren

+ HQ +

Captain [6 PL, -1CP, 124pts]: Jump Pack, Master Swordsman, Storm shield, Stratagem: Field Commander, Thunder hammer

+ Troops +

Scout Squad [6 PL, 55pts]

. Scout Sergeant: Bolt pistol, Boltgun

. 4x Scout w/Boltgun

++ Total: [12 PL, -2CP, 179pts] ++

I never finished painting it, I swapped over to Chaos - but it's on my eventual painting "to do" list.

Having some posting issues from Battlescribe:

Cheap Battallion for mono-SM:

Telion

Chronus in Stalker

3*5 Scouts, Bolters, Heavy Bolter

Total: 385 points.

Allows combo of hellfire shells with Telion's +1 to hit.

Chronus provides decent firepower- hits on a 3+, doesn't degrade.

Leaves a lot of room for hard-hitting stuff, and provides 5 CP.

  • 2 weeks later...

Some very interesting suggestions here. I guess everything is going to be turned upside down when the new codex arrives. Some quick thoughts I've got:

Drop pod salamander melta patrol detachment

Drop pod black templars?

The ultra marines company champion seems to get a lot better, maybe we can build a vanguard detachment with 3 small elite slots + captain?

Imperial fists could be a good choice for a small indomitus crusaders detachment.

Keep it coming!
