See... I like the idea of a Chaplain Dreadnought. Forge World has rules for it, because it used to have a model. Rather than eBay myself a classic one, I want to make one. I was thinking the Venerable kit with a headswap, but can anyone think of any ways to do it that could be better?

Note: Blood Angels methods are appreciated, because the model is to be the Head Chaplain of a BA Successor, but not necessary, and I figure methods could be pretty much anything in the end, so I'm posting here.

The BA Death Company dread has a skull head, which is pretty much perfect. Put a bunch of imperial bling all over the front plates. Wings from dark/blood angel kits, lots of purity seals, and you're all set.

This. My Dark Angels Chaplain Dreadnought used the front plate from the BA Death Company Dreadnought grafted onto the normal Venerable Dreadnought:

Aside from that, everything on it is from the normal Venerable Dreadnought kit. Well, the Inferno gun is from the Baal Predator and the melee weapon is the FW Dreadfire one

Two of my Dreads, the first is just a custodes contemptor with a skull. The other is the Redemptor Dreadnought where I used a Venerable Dreadnought sarcophagus, you could use the Blood Angels skull one, instead of what came with it.

Just some ideas.

Here is how I made mine (edit...assuming you meant a venerable chaplain dread from FW rules)

I purchased some BA Furioso's on Ebay and converted them.

The wings on the side torsos reminded me of the FW model

I use one as my WL so I blinged him up even more

I don't do skull heads but a head swap is easy and would probably meet your goal

These are in my painting queue for ETL 2019

If you're open to using a Redemptor dreadnought, you may like the chaplain dreadnought that scriv_paints put together. It'd take a lot of work but the payoff would be worth it.

Ok, apologies for the threadomancy but this seems the best place to post this. Click pics for bigger.

So I got a cheap, ropey Dread from eBay last year, and didn't really have much clue what to do with it once I saw the state of it. Front was melted/scraped off, only one arm, and one foot was loose in a zippy bag. But it was dirt cheap.

Looking thru the bits drawers, I realised the unused Sanguinary Guard wings might fit the carapace nicely, and with the skull already in place, I was a goodly way to a Chaplain Dread.

Did a bit Google, found the rules, gs'd the foot back on, added a Venerable Dread claw, and bodged together an oversized, magnetised banner for the back.

Once the wings were on, I added the sensor box on top, as the left wing covers the original. I've no idea what that little box is in canon, always assumed it was targeting, so best to uncover it. I'm not super excited about the loincloth hiding the damaged sarcophagus, but once I get some paint on it it should look better.
Then I was stuck with the right arm - the other 6 Dreads are red, so I couldn't just add a magnet and an arm. I'd have to build one.

I had two lascannons left from my Baal Land Raider, so I glued those together as a start. Drilled a hole in the inner one to attach it, then cut a cardboard template to see how far off my measurements were. Added a couple of mm to allow for the angles, then scored and glued the correctly sized plastic card in place.

I realised then that I needed something on the slope to hold the plasticard in place, so quickly chopped up some plastic beam and glued that in, so the skin would have something to hold to, and reattached the outer skin.

Cut some little blocks to add texture, and then added nail beads for rivets. Voila!

Where can I find the rules for a chaplain Dreadnought? I love dreadnoughts and love chaplains, sounds like an ideal project.

Forge World Imperial Armor: Forces of the Adeptus Astartes. He's just a Venerable with Chaplain aura and fluff that takes up an HQ slot.

Not exactly the same as the Chaplain aura.

It gives +1 Strength to <CHAPTER> units fighting the same target as him.

Which can get silly

I remember a thread giving advice about how best to use a chaplain Dreadnought, but can't find it. Anyone help me find it, or got any good ideas for how to use one?

Use him as you would a Chaplain. He gets the same prayers as other Chaplains, but he has an "always-on" aura of +1 Strength to <Chapter> units fighting the same thing as him, which is unique. Most people say he's useful as a Pseudo-Mortis dread (as he can replace both his CCW with ranged weapons), but I like running him as purely-Melee or a combination Melee+Ranged.

His unique aura could make certain units very, very scary. Hammernators wounding Knights on 3s anyone?
