Successor Chapter Question

Recommended Posts

I have started a Successor Chapter called the Dark Praetorians, which are intended as a Dark Angels (Primaris) successor. I'm using DA upgrade bits but otherwise vanilla Primaris, and I've changed up the color scheme a bit (such as black gauntlets/fists and helmets). I've got my own background for the Chapter, but want to use the new codex rules, specifically the successor tactics - Long Range Marksmen and Stealthy - as well as the Stratagem that allows for your own Chapter Master.

My concern is that while I am not using any DA specific units and have my own background for the chapter, it still looks too much like DA - pretty similar color scheme and DA bits such as hooded heads etc. Also, I've read that there are restrictions in the DA codex for DA successors.

Is this something that would bother a lot of players? I would prefer to be able to use the book that better fits my custom chapter, but for example I don't want to spend time painting up DA themed Centurions just to be told I must run these guys as a Dark Angels Codex army.

You can do whatever you want with a homebrew chapter.

By RAW if you use the generic Space Marine codex you're a successor of either White Scars, UItramarines, Salamanders, Imperial Fists, Iron Hands or Raven Guard but it also tells you to choose one of those for rules purposes if your chapter is an 'unknown founding' so logically that can't be absolute. Salamanders don't even have any canonical successor chapters but can still be chosen.

There's no reason why a successor chapter can't look more like a unrelated first founding than their actual primogenitor. Lamenters are more Imperial Fists coloured than any Imperial Fists successor but have always used Blood Angels rules.

Technically there's no rule that stops you from hopping from chapter tactic to chapter tactic as you please. It's only on specific tournaments when they tell you to use a specific subfaction rule if your models are painted that way.

Just like with WYSIWYG make sure that it's not too confusing for your opponent and talk with him beforehand. That should be enough for friendly games.

And welcome to the forum. :smile.:
