NTaW
Welcome to the Necron Unit of the Week Series! Each week a different unit will be highlighted for discussion until we have amalgamated a full list of our available options and their relevant tactics as 8th edition evolves. We already have a few previous entries but things change as FAQs and Chapter Approved books get released and we playtest new ideas so please feel free to reopen a topic when new options become relevant for discussion. Please keep in mind this isn't to lament the status of featured units or compare them to others but to try and find their potential for all types of gameplay. This week’s unit is: As a loose guide, here are some questions we could answer to help out any who happen upon our metallic corner of the B&C: What size unit do you feel works best? What Code do you prefer? What synergies have you found with other units? Are there any stratagems that specifically buff this unit? Do you build your list around this unit or use it to fill some points? What are some of the strengths and weaknesses of this unit? Now over to you! BaronTuman
Sizes are almost always 10. I can't make squads of 5 make sense, they take too many points from other units, which means that the CP they provide are not as worthwhile. Sautek, because they can benefit or cause Methodical Destruction on things that "need to die, right now." Other Sautek units for MD and Overlords. Lords are far less useful, would rather just have more immortals. I use 3-5 units of 10 plus Immotekh and an Overlord, or none. I guess that means I plan around them. People tend to underestimate them, then realize how many shots they get and kill them quickly. They are slow but have good range. Armor reduces their output dramatically. Tyriks
I always run mine as Tesla. The only exception is if I know for a fact I won't have overlords around (i.e. If I bring only one and he/she has a specific mission), then I go Gauss. Usually though I bring 3 squads, all Tesla. I'm not sure I've ever had a game I didn't bring Immortals. On one hand I agree that ten to a unit makes more sense - more chance for RP, and it makes MWBD more valuable. However, they aren't hard to kill ten at a time so I often feel like I'm wasting points filling out units. So I go back and forth on unit size a lot. Right now I typically bring one full sized squad for each overlord available, any others I leave at 5 to keep them cheap. I do like dropping them in someone's face with the Veil and blowing a unit away. With MWBD, Tesla outperforms gauss even against power armor (as long as there aren't hit penalties). It is a very satisfying sensation to fire twenty shots and get thirty hits! As far as dynasty goes I don't really min/max detachments so I just pick whatever best suits whichever units I'm focused on that game. I find most games I can go the whole game without the dynasty mattering for my Immortals at all unless I'm trying to make it matter. Personally I enjoy Nephrekh and Mephrit most for that.
