Rating, comparing and discussing the Primarchs series so far

I do love the idea of a Primarch book which is simply one big battle or campaign, and uses that to effectively show you a heap of stuff about the Primarch and Legion. But I really don't know if we're likely to get one in the mould which really works.

I think Ferrus came closest? But what I think really stood out in that book was the opportunity to juxtapose the Iron Hands against the Emperor's Children, again, those bits were more interesting than the fighting, the duelling with Arca Duarna* and the scenes with the Xiphon pilots were some of my favourites. Also, the juxtaposition of the original Iron Hands and the new ones was interesting.

Similarly, Russ's book did something similar with the inevitable comparison with the Dark Angels, and the way the story was being told to the new Chapter recruit.

(*I apologise if I'm butchering the spelling, I've only listened to the books, and have never read the name.)

my only ranks are great and less great.

great: fulgrim, perturabo, ferrus, khan, leman and lorgar

less great: magnus, guilliman and vulkan

i’ve found interesting insights in all the ones i’ve read thus far, the less great ones just had more “meh” before the gold

I'm actually not a big fan of Curze as a character but his primarch book to me is indisputably tier one. It absolutely fits the bill of explaining who the character is, fleshed out his backstory and explores flaws and what might have been.

To me in order to be a good primarch book, it has to really tell us something about the character of the primarch and be a sympathetic rendition of who they are. In general I prefer it when they feature primarchs interacting with each other but I think that's because it gives us additional insights into their character when we see how they react to their peers and how their peers see them.

I don't think it necessarily has to be sympathetic (see Corax, and its fleshing out of Corax's personal views and attitudes towards humanity and justice, even at the expense of the wider war effort).

Yeah that's fair, only thing I would change there for me is Ferrus with Magnus. I felt Ferrus to be not very interesting. I was really hoping to see the fight that earned his necron hands, more early life stuff for him. I think when its the Lion's turn they are going to have a bit of trouble as we already seen a lot about him already in HH. I expect to see the Lion's book as probably near the end or the last one as a result.

Tbh my preferences for the Lion would be to have a book which views him largely from outside, over the course of a campaign which demonstrates his genius as a commander whilst also laying the ground for events to come.

Split it four or three ways with PsOV from Luther, Alajos and one or two others, and dip into the Lion's head sparingly. I think you'll have the bones of a good story already.

I found the Jaghatai book to be a series of vignettes more than a novel, but in a good way. We have a nice Sejanus cameo, a front-and-centre role for Hasik which I feel will enhance Scars, good action storytelling and even a good showing for the Orks.

Hi,

Does any one here know if they have a release plan for the rest of the Primarch books?

Or when the next one will come and whom it will be about?

Nothing is confirmed on that front as far as I know. We know Mortarion, Alpharius, Horus, Sanguinius, Lion and Dorn are remaining, and Swallow is writing Sanguinius'. That's it, to my knowledge.
