Ratherdashing
I recently acquired a long sought-after model for me: a Stormwolf. I have a proxy built Landraider that I love and have used a couple times to protect/ferry Blood Claws across the table. It usually dies pretty quick, but often serves its purpose in doing so. Anyway with the Stormwolf in hand I'm working on list building and sod if it isn't hard to fit it and the Landraider together in a list. My thinking was that a second hard target would take pressure off the LRC or force a tough choice on the opponent. I was also thinking I could put my Wulfen, who usually go On The Hunt, in the plane for a more reliable and flexible second turn charge. Keeping in mind this is obviously not a super competitive environment anyway, but I do want to make smart choices. Would you replace the LRC with the Stormwolf? Can both fit in? If I wanted to go full armored I have a Predator and two Dreds I can use, but that combo means basically no CP as I don't have many points left for troops. Mostly thinking for 2000 points here. I also have three drop pods I'm eager to try out with the new rules, but I realize something's got to give. I've got the core SW units available (pretty much any HQ option I'd need, Grey Hunters, Long Fangs) but no Primaris. Do you all have any list ideas or suggestions to use one or two of these beautiful behemoth tanks? PeteySödes
Stormwolves are just straight up better than LRCs on every front. It's not even a contest unfortunately. I feel like using both is a lot of points for not a lot of payout. Rune Priest Jbickb
Sadly land raiders draw to much fire for their cost. There are cheaper bullet sponges for sure. As for the stormwolf, I love playing them. Keep in mind they also draw fire but the -1 to hit for flying is good. Plus you can get another -1 from rune priests really helps them survive. Yoyo ninja
I try and play a full mechanised company, but it's just not good this Ed unfortunately. Our tanks just don't cut it, they are expensive and are killed very easily. I've never had much luck with my stormwolf either to be fair, especially if it's got anything good inside, they are awesome bullet magnets. TiguriusX
Flyer hidden in the back corner may get lucky and survive incoming fire but dont bet on it Everyone in a competitive scene is geared up to kill knights (T8 24 wounds 4++). Land raider and stormwolf are basically target practice Non competitive has no defined play so who knows Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/357993-is-there-a-place-for-landraidersstormwolfs/#findComment-5375677 Share on other sites
TSkouboe
Just because it is less durable than a knight doesn't make the Stormwolf bad. Most things are less durable than knights. They serve different purposes. I've had a lot of fun playing with my Stormwolf. My problem with the Stormwolf is that it serves two purposes at once, which makes it less specialised. It's too expensive to be just a transport, but it isn't an efficient dedicated fire base. Being a transport with large capacity, I want to fly it forward to unload, but that usually puts it in dangerous spots; I can't fly too far from the enemy because I want the Blood Claws inside to reach them next turn. On the other hand, it's a very fast transport that will guarantee getting your units to a saga-potential environment (unless shot down before your first turn). If you have other units rushing forward, the Stormwolf may be a good "Distraction Carnifex" from your foot-slogging Wulfen or Thunderwolves. Yoyo ninja
I don't think anyone is saying the stormwolf should compare to a Knight in durability or that it was bad because it doesn't. What was being said was that armies are built to bring down a Knight in one turn, and a stormwolf is not as durable as a Knight, so expect to loose your stormwolf on turn one. And you explained the other issue those big transports have (the stormwolf and landraider), they don't do anything well enough to be worth their points. And its far to expensive to be a distraction carnifex, that many points needs to be doing work before blowing up and leaving its contents battered and stranded. I own both vehicles and enjoy seeing them on the board, but they are not going to win you games very ofter unfortunately.
