Space Marine Speech

Something to consider, if you really want to, is the size of their esophagus. It most likely grew with everything else in them and they have an extra lung if I remember correctly as well. If you compare this to musical instruments, using the dizi here for my example, you will see that as the dizi gets bigger the tone of the sound drops into lower chords. So more than likely Space Marines speak in very deep tones much like James Earl Jones or most likely even deeper.

I believe the marines voice can be as varied as you want them to be. The galaxy is a big place after-all and it all depends on the culture of the chapter. Personally, I do like the Dawn of War marine quotes. They bombastically over the top that it is somewhat hilarious. Even more so when you know the marines are being serious.

“Terminators ready!” from DoW1 is all I can hear in my head. That’s the baseline tone, anyways, then various subcultures like Space Wolves would have level of accents on top of that.

Romans and Greeks and Egyptians (don’t forget the premier unit in the armies of Cyrus/Xerxes after the Immortals were Egyptian Marines) all had marines (small m). Presumably even the Phoenicians and other sea fairing nations did as well.

In modern times (1700s +) Marines (big M) have become a thing where the groups of troops that traditionally did the work of marines (naval infantry) have become formalized into their own Thing. Not unlike how some nations have specialized departments of the military to focus on ballistic missiles/WMDs or such. I believe the Dutch were the first Marines (big M) followed by the Royal (British). The largest and (arguably) most famous Marines now being the USMC. Spain and South Korea have also traditionally been renowned for their Marines in addition to US, UK, and the Netherlands.

From a fiction standpoint, US Marines (big M) are absolutely the inspiration for Space Marines with the combinations of Galactic Marines of 30’s pulp, Starship Troopers and Aliens being the most mainstream solidifiers of the trope. 40k, no doubt being a British work, certainly takes them in a more knightly direction while also having them more heavily show the commando (in the classic sense, not the modern misused sense) nature.
