Counts as old marines

Quick question, my ultras atm are primaris only. Personally, I dont want any old marines in the army due to the scale difference looks strange to me. Would gw tournaments or a normal person kick up a fuss by proxying a primaris model as an old marine hq model. For instance, a primaris chaplain as Cassius, a converted intercessor as chapter champion. Primaris ancient as chapter ancient. Obviously I wont plonk a repulsor down and call it a whirlwind etc and I would ensure all models are wyswyg. Pretty much just so I can get access to the unique HQ options without having to have a smaller model on the field. Furthermore, would playing a primaris captain as a bog standard captain be too far?

I will never be able to admit to being a normal player about this, but I'd allow it (and have definitely considered doing it for my Wolves) - the thing I think you need to consider is how do you distinguish the miniature enough to keep consistent while you are playing?

How will you make your 'Pri-Cassius' different from a standard Primaris Chaplain so that if you field both, you and your opponent can tell the difference at a glance, etc.? How do you ensure that you remember that you can't transport them in your fielded Repulsors/Impulsors?

As far as why don't they have the Wound + Attack of the normal Primaris - that's easy - they are still weak from crossing the Rubicon Primaris - but they were desperately needed on the battlefield; it was recent, all the implants haven't fully meshed and begun working yet; something went wrong and while they grew and are using new armor, the implants didn't become fully functional and will need adjusting, etc. - it shouldn't be too had to have a story reason for it.

I doubt that anyone is going to fuss too much with you having made their targets slightly bigger (in this doofy age of simulationist True Line of Sight while most everything else is abstraction) as long as how you play them remains consistent.

For tournaments and GW events, I would definitely get in contact with them as soon as you can and ask to ensure that they'd be okay with it before you end up unable to use some nicely converted models.

Since we know that older armor can somehow be modified, adapted and fused with the MkX plate (Armor of Heraclus is a modification/adaptation of the Armor of Antilochus, per the Ultramarines Supplement), I would take the opportunity to customize the MkX plate that most closely resembles the armor of the character/model you're trying to represent as Primaris as much as you can. My starting point for Cassius would be the Kill Team Cassius model for as many bits as you can scavenge, and do your best to replace the pec plate of a Tacticus Marine with his Mk4 breast plate, and if there's any way you can get/make his crazy winged 'agemo' gorget, that would be awesome.

Then you could add thin strips of plasticard to make the trim, and add some microbeads or tiny rivets to it, and if there's any way you can figure out how, shave off and salvage the backpack topper and reliquary from his power plant (or just modify his power plant to have the Primaris exhaust vents), that would be great too.

Anyway, just some more thoughts - I think I also edited some additional thoughts in while you were responding to my above post.

Personally, I say go for it on this project, it seems like it could turn out pretty awesome!
