Jerethdatiger
So I've been tossing around ideas for next army and after reading bane blade I like the idea of building an army around one. Then I read rules on manicure and deaths strike and I was thinking what about a desperate hour army Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/358430-possible-guard-theme-army/ Share on other sites
Bjorn Firewalker
You also need transports for the infantry models, and some form of air defense. I wrote rules for a Baneblade variant with the ability to do so (search for "Fireblade" on this page), but I was mocked when I posted my ideas on the Homegrown Rules forum. If you're curious: FIREBLADE (BANEBLADE), 480 points This Baneblade variant replaces the bow-mounted Demolisher cannon with a ramp, allowing it to serve as an assault vehicle. It has four sponson-mounted twin-linked heavy bolters and a bow-mounted twin-linked heavy bolter; lascannons are not mounted atop the sponsons, as their barrels obstruct the primary weapon when the turret traverses. It may mount vertical launch flakk missiles on its rear bustle rack. Named after the sword Ferrus Manus forged and wielded in his final battle, and manufactured for the Steel Confessors defending Poseidon during the 10th Black Crusade. WarriorFish
With the magic of magnets you can have a Baneblade for every occasion :D You can build a force around one quite easily but you'll need more than a couple of Deathstrikes to help out, as they will be priority #1 for your opponent's AT followed by the Baneblade. However there's plenty of scope for supporting elements in the theme, the cobbled together survivors can easily include other vehicles - a Leman Russ or two that have endured all the enemy can throw at them, a Hellhound squadron arrives to pitch in etc :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/358430-possible-guard-theme-army/#findComment-5388525 Share on other sites

Inso
I've often thought that a platoon of troops inside a Storm Lord would be a great building block for an army... three of those with an additional Bane Blade as a 'command' vehicle... It would certainly make for an interesting take on a mechanised force :) . As to your first post, a Baneblade is a revered artifact and, although it may not win any battles, it makes perfect sense for it to be a rallying point for all those wandering around the battlefield, trying to regain a coherent unit somewhere. It would also be thematic to include some religious zealots, priests and missionaries... I'm not so set on the deathstrikes though... maybe Basilisks instead? So you'd have to select a different regiment to the Artillery and if they're in the same detachment as the scions the scions would lose their benefit Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/358430-possible-guard-theme-army/#findComment-5389325 Share on other sites
Exilyth
The manticore/deathstrike kit has four parts which either go on the deathstrike missile or form half of each manticore missile. I just built the manticore missiles, built the launcher rails in manticore configuration and filled the gaps on the deathstrike missile with plasticard and added a some parts from the bits box. Didn't glue any missiles on, now I can either run a manticore or a deathstrike (and remove missiles as they're spend). Gives me some flexibility: manticore for serious games, deathstrike for fun. As for the theme army: infantry waves supported by heavy ordnance are a staple of guard fluff. With the way rules work, you just need to be aware that when you swarm the board with infantry, the enemy could choose to go into meelee to prevent being targeted/shot by indirect fire. Jerethdatiger
From what I gather you can choose from the doctrines if you make your own regiment. But you can't add the tempestus to another regiment It's a stretch but I really think it might be possible to have the bolter and chainsword 48th. Jerethdatiger
Yes but that's under force construction. For including tempestus. In a detachment Not under regimental doctrines. NatBrannigan
The MT doctrines is for MT units only, there's no way to give their Doctinres to other units in the codex and no way to give other doctrines to MT units. Same with Bullgryns and their Key Word (I assume to avoid being able to give them the Fix Bayonets or move move move order which would be outrageously powerful). A ragged looking last stand army is a good idea! Maybe make some Command Squads to look like medical teams, make some objective markers to look like wounded soldiers you're bravely trying to save? Lots of possibilities there, hope you go for it. Good excuse to have a couple of different regiments in your army, to show it's just random survivors coming together rather than a force just starting it's campaign. Maybe 2 Company commanders, from different regiments, modelled to be arguing with each other over whose in charge? Deathstrikes though.... I like the idea but they're sooooo bad. This would work with Basilisks and Manticores (which in "reality" would be as far back form the front lines as possible) as well, but I get that you lose the aspect of holding off the enemy until the Deathstrikes can fire. Harrowmaster
The MT keyword can't be given to any unit with regiment but can a custom keyword be used in conjunction with the stormtroopers doctrine (though they won't get the order, strat, wl trait or relic)? Bjorn Firewalker
What does that mean in English? Mikhail the Valhallan and Jerethdatiger are referring to the Valkyria Chronicles video games. You'll probably need familiarity with the franchise (which I lack, as I don't own a PlayStation) to understand what they're talking about. MinoanFresco
Hello all, Yes, is there an official GW ruling on this we can source? Because if it is possible to take the stormtroopers doctrine for a custom regiment I'd say that it'd be worth sacrificing a warlord trait, relic, stratagem and regimental order. Also, love the themed army concept, Jerethdatiger. Back from the warp, ~MinoanFresco That is the question. MinoanFresco
Hello again! I've done a bit of mining into FAQ's, designer's commentary and codex, and I didn't find anything prohibiting the use of the Storm Troopers doctrine when creating a custom regiment. I did find this subreddit article, which I found most edifying: https://www.reddit.com/r/WarhammerCompetitive/comments/8zmwb5/astra_militarum_custom_regiments_and_the_storm/ TLDR?/Waah! Reading's hard!!: Well, too bad! I'm never concise! Activate WALL-O-TEXT!!!!!!!!!!!! The confusion seems to be coming from two separate rules and their specific wording. Firstly, the <Regiment> keyword rule on page 84. And secondly, the Regimental Doctrines rule on page 132. I'll do my best to shed some light on this issue. The <Regiment> keyword rule on page 84 states: "...If an Astra Militarum datasheet does not specify which regiment it is drawn from, it will have the <Regiment> keyword. When you include such a unit in your army, you must nominate which regiment that unit is from..." Okay, well, I want my Leman Russ's to have the Militarum Tempestus keyword. Then they'll have access to all th- EXCEPTION! The rule goes on to say that the MT regiment keyword is for MT units only! So, you can't go nominating your Veterans or your Baneblade or whatever as part of a MT regiment. Sorry, kid. Looks like the MT warlord trait, relic, stratagem, order and regimental doctrine are for MT units exclusively, it seems. Only, eh hoo-whaaa? What's this?? Turn with me in your text books to page 132, guardsmen. The Regimental Doctrines rule on page 132 reads: "If your army is Battle-forged, all <Regiment> units in an Astra Militarum Detachment [...] gain a Regimental Doctrine, so long as every unit in that Detachment [...] is drawn from the same regiment." (I put in the ellipses to make the reading and dissecting easier. Rule dissecting continued below...) Units excluded from the affects of this rule are <Regiment> units in Super-Heavy Auxiliary detachments, Advisors, like priests and Auxilla units, like ogryn. These are units which can never gain a Regimental Doctrine. Sorry, Crusaders. No Brutal Strength for you. (Though that'd be awesome!) The rule then goes on to explain that every <Regiment> unit in a Battle-forged AM detachment gains a Regimental Doctrine matching the regiment they came from. Cadians get the Cadian doctrine, Tallarn get the Tallarn doctrine. Makes sense? Cool. Okay, bottom of the page: "If your chosen regiment does not have an associated Regimental Doctrine, you may pick the doctrine that you feel best represents your army..." The codex then gives an example of this. That, to me, is a clear as it gets. When creating your own regiment you don't get a relic, or warlord trait, or a stratagem, or a regimental order (like more renowned regiments of the guard) BUT you can pick a Regimental Doctrine. SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, Jerethdatiger. To answer the question, "Can I create my own guard regiment and give them the Storm Troopers Regimental Doctrine?" I say yes, but be prepared to explain. Thoughts? ~MinoanFresco Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/358430-possible-guard-theme-army/#findComment-5393074 Share on other sites
Jerethdatiger
That's my understanding also. And to me it's worth it for this army It's like space marines if you make your own successor you can choose who they came from. Jerethdatiger
Read the reddit.... Wow its quite confusing people If they didn't intend the storm trooper doctrine cto be used as.
