Babysitting Daemon Engines

Recommended Posts

Hail!

So I have been using ahriman on a disk to babysit my maulerfiends in recent games and have found them to be pretty lackluster with ahriman trying to buff them so they can get at something...

I was curious to know what you all did in this case? Do you just let the friends fend for themselves?

Thoughts? Ideas?

I don't use maulerfiends but I have opponents who do.

They always appear capable of operating on their own, and it's good that you have at least a pair running together. Daemonforge makes one better, and won't really require other offensive buffs.

The defensive buffs (glamour and weaver) might better serve our troops like big units of Scarabs or Tzaangors, so I'd leave Ahriman to that role.

I use one for my CSM and plan to add a second eventually. As Arch says the Daemonforge Stratagem is the best support one can get, I've found that they tend to get a lot of attention so trying to buff them is often throwing good money after bad. They are pretty capable especially with the tendrils (also makes them cheaper) so I usually let them fend for themselves. I can rely on it doing some damage or holding a flank enough for my forces to get their act together in most cases :smile.:

I think they work nicely as a supporting role, but aren't made for the limelight so Ahriman especially is not doing his best work trying to make them the stars of the show. Combined arms approaches work best anyway, I imagine some Rubrics having one nearby as they advance on their goals will make the juicy prospect of combat against them less enticing for your opponent!

I have a defiler and a forge fiend, I baby sit them with a demon prince who has gaze of fate and flickering flames. giving str 8 auto cannons +1 to wound is magical and Rerolls I can use to fix perils is priceless. plus the demon prince and defiler really discourage deep striking in my back field.

The best buff you can get your fiends is a( or 3) Disco Lords. Period.

I’m usually much more open to multiple strategies but I say this after a great deal of practice for ITC, Maelstrom and tournament play.

The ‘Daemon engine’ theme works best with the CSM codex overall. Specifically for character support, you cannot beat Disco Lords for your Daemon Engines. Specifically for Psyker support, you’re best off with the Master of Possession. Not only for offensive reasons but healing and defence as well.

Don’t forget the Disco Lord not only helps you but negativily affects enemy vehicles, of which Knights can be a big problem ( and often are for this specific list theme).

I played off against a few mirror lists in tournament play and I beat or finished above each one. This isn’t bragging at all ( I still got hammered by Eldar Airshow/ Knights w/Biker Shield Captains and Deldar).

No ego, just truth; the reason I won is the opponents’ put too much faith in Ahriman, and/or Thosand Sons Psykers or even Renegades tactics carrying the negatives presented with Daemon engine lists.

Ahriman (for competitive aspects) is much more powerful behind a ton of Tzaangors or... (uhg) Plaguebearers.

If you want to improve your chances with any Daemon engines, I highly recommend creating a secondary detachment for them. Consider them a secondary, and largely independent component of your army. Consider Disco Lords at the heart, with Flawless Host traits ( exploding 5’s for Discos) or even some other Renegade. Create your Thousand Sons as a separate entity that will stay independent, but functional behind the Daemon Engines.

I was not expecting that answer prot. But I will take it into consideration.

If I had a pair of ranged DE and was using an exalted sorcerer on disk I might use the strategem to switch out a spell for flickering flame with temporal manipulations and smite all at the ready. Maybe a 10 to 15 tzangoor screen or a couple chaos spawn. Move up the board, hold objectives and castle up as neccisito.

If I was running cc DE I might throw in a Demon Prince with claws instead. Gaze of Fate is auto include for me though I get hung up on taking either flickering flame or diabolic strength. I would play the DP agressive against heavies and look at maulers as a sort of escort.
