Evil Eye Posted September 19, 2019 Share Posted September 19, 2019 I started an (entirely unofficial and not even "branded" as connected to B&C) server a while back, but I held off on inviting anyone as I'm not sure on the rules regarding that. If the mods are OK with it I'd be willing to open it up via DM invites though as it's currently sitting unused and empty. It's an instant messaging and VOIP application similar to Skype or Teamspeak initially intended for online gaming use, but over the past few years has become something of a monstrosity beyond that, with people establishing hundreds of servers -- chatroom groups, essentially -- dedicated to the gamut of modern interests. Discourse there in my experience (at least in large communities beyond a few friends) tends to be rude, crude and/or full of attitude -- I will admit that I am guilty of all three in my time on the platform, to degrees which might appear somewhat extreme were they to be put on full display-- though there is a certain agency of group culture to some degree as well: a simple consequence of the difficulty of moderating constant user interaction to the nth degree. It's not something I'd recommend for the faint of heart, but there's good, if perhaps cheap and base, fun to be had shooting the with folks. If anyone's interested in getting in touch with me over there, I'll put my Discord ID in my forum profile page, at the bottom of the About Me section. Chat group functionality isn't necessary to support our mission statement (The Bolter & Chainsword exists to help people better enjoy and understand the Warhammer 40,000 hobby and games set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe through constructive discussion). The content of chat group discussion can't be controlled/moderated and it's very easy for individuals' contributions to a chat to deviate from the content and/or standards of what we expect of B&C discussions. That said, chat groups can be fun in their own way, and they can help hobbyists to connect with other hobbyists. There are plenty of WH40K Discord chat groups, so it should be easy for hobbyists to find one that suits their needs. What we probably can do is to update the Contact Methods data to include Discord IDs to facilitate contact. That probably won't happen until we update the board software, though. The problem with this is that once you put the "B&C" name on it in any format, for all practical purposes it becomes associated with the B&C even if it is "unofficial". The B&C is recognized for upholding a certain standard and we are proud of that, and,.... Well, I'd happily abuse mod powers to boot a certain loudmouth for life on day 1, but honestly, one shamelessly abused perk just isn't motivation, you know?
