Reaver Carapace Megabolters on pre-order

Ordered four. I'm going to use some spare Warlord laser blasters to make a pair for a warlord. I actually think they might be a pretty good option, and maybe the only real rival to apocalypse launchers.

They might look a bit tiny though. We'll have to see.

There’s only those bits of resin scenery that’s been announced and unreleased, isn’t there? Could do with an event to show us what’s next.

And we are still waiting on the updated Questoris box, with the carapace weapons and fists.

Are the bolters actually worth getting when apocalypse missiles exist?

Yes definitely, in my opinion. They’re certainly better for a reaver that’s working up close.

Since the faq, mega bolters get +1 to hit within 10”. That’s quite a lot of the time for a melee reaver. Combined with the rapid trait, it results in a lot more hits than missiles would do.

Vulcan mega bolters are surprisingly good finishing weapons, hitting damaged locations to push crits through. The combination of a lot of shots, +1 to hit (giving 50% more hits vs a target in the open) and bonuses from structural damage can be devastating.

It’s fair to say missiles are still the default option. You’ll always be able to fire them, which isn’t the case for bolters with their 20” range. But bolters definitely have a use.

What about the carapace weapon dead zone due to scale?

Its not really a dead zone, as its only units smaller than scale 8 that cant be targeted. Really devalues it vs warhounds and knights, as its impossible to get the +1 vs them, but makes it decent against anything bigger. Still, id rather have the apocs, vulcans seem really, really niche to the point of not being useful. Im still going to buy one, because I have a problem, but not sure itll see much play.

Mine arrived - hurrah!

I have to say, I find Vulcan mega bolters great on reavers and warhounds. They’re one of my favourite guns. It helps that I really like the ferrox maniple, which gives me a nice bonus if I’m in close. Once you start firing one of these at a structurally-compromised location, day where you just hit with a maximal plasma blastgun, pretty soon you get to roll on the catastrophic damage chart.

That can be where things start to go wrong of course, if you’ve stood too close!
