Decade
So I came into a large alpha legion army after selling off all my 40k armies. I do have Alpharius and a Praetor on the way to me but I made this list using some of the things I have and was hoping I could get some feedback from more experienced alpha legion players. I should note that I prefer fluff over the most powerful of lists. I've always preferred trying to make lists that can hold their own while remaining somewhat near what the army would really look like. It would like a bit too long to write in all that I have that is not in this list so if you have any suggestions on things to swap or add, let me know and I will see if I have it. ++ Crusade (Legiones Astartes: Age of Darkness Army List) [2,995pts] ++ + HQ + Armillus Dynat [200pts] + Elites + Contemptor Dreadnought Talon [375pts] . Unknown Legionnaire
First off, let me just say that the XXth Legion excels at combining their 'Mutable Tactics' with things like 'Veteran Tactics' and the more generic RoW out there. Just a few things coming to mind with your initial list: - Harrower: Power Axe & Power Dagger offer no synergy. You want to pair the Dagger with another specialist weapon, I.E. a Power Fist or Chain Fist. - Tactical Squads, I.E. the core of your army: By not selecting dedicated transports for them, you're limiting yourself to the Infiltrate USR for your Mutable Tactics, thereby seriously crippling the tactical approach of your army. Your Tactical Sergeant would love some Power Fists to go with their Power Daggers ... - The Mor Deythan Squad and the Veteran Squad both seem very small and rather unsure about their purpose. The Vets have no means of transportation and are dependable on Infiltrate as well as it seems. Both units will by wiped quickly and will provide easy VP for First Blood. - The Seekers are expensive, have no combi-weapons, and will die as easily as regular Tacticals. Seekers are a great unit (perhaps my favourite one for Alpha Legion), but they need to be equipped to bring the business to the enemy. They need FnP and / or a transport. - The weapons on the Contemptor don't really synergize. Plasma Cannons are kinda meh anyways (even if being stylistically awesome). Go for double Kheres and make that Contemptor a Mortis and save some points in the process. - Your Arcus wants some of those nifty skyfire rockets. - You will not get Dynat's warlord trait, since you're running your Primarch, just saying. That was some great feedback, man. I really appreciate it and will be making some changes. Rhinos are something I am actually lacking with the army I have so I will be looking to get 3-4 as I do enjoying running troops :) I do not have a dread with dual kheres but I will see about changing a couple things with what I have. I'll be playing only my third game of 30k this weekend. Dynat is being used while I don't have Alpharius. I didn't know the power axe didn't synergize with the power dagger. :( If you don't mind. I'd like to send you the information on all I have and see if you can maybe assist me with coming up with a decent list? If you've got some spare time :p Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/358637-new-to-30k-and-new-to-alpha-legion/#findComment-5394517 Share on other sites
Vykes
-smirks- what can I say, Unknown Legionnaire's definitely got the good of it as far as I'd say: Rhino's, a dreadclaw if you need a particular hack-n-slash unit, or precision fire support group. I still like seeker's in outflanking Proteus's, especially the triple-las version. The only other thing I'd be a little afraid of is a lack of multiple sources of heavy armour busting: The Venator is good, but it's the only really prominent fixture against those AV 14 and flare shielded sorts. And I can usually trust my luck to have the stupid thing get hung up on a sand dune and bogging down or getting a lone grav pistol shot throwing a track on a lucky pen*. So, even adding melta bombs to vets can make a different. As can the usual assortment of Kraken loaded Lightning or an assault marine+combat shield+melta bomb group. Those single melta bombs are good for hurting some lighter armour or getting lucky and crippling a heavy tank, but getting a few chainfists or the like tends to yield good results when you really need it. *Or it just exploding thanks to a snap shot las cannon at long range rolling enough 6's to ruin a superheavy in one shot. STC Logisengine
I'd drop the sponsons on the Sicarian Venator as the neutron laser is an Ordnance weapon so you can only fire snap shots with those - not worth the investment in points. Also, the Sicarian Omega is a cool model but it truly is not even remotely woth the points, you are paying a Leviathan's worth of points for a couple of hevy bolters and what amounts to 6 plasmagun shots or a half-range lascannon that may with a bit of luck knock of another d3 hullpoints. For the same points you get 2 quadlaser vindicators or 2 plasma executioner predators. Or if you want all the dakka - A fire raptor gunship with hellstrike missiles will cost you a mere 220pts. Take vexillas for every squad, it makes a lot of difference. The seeker sergeant has too much wargear (50pts!), combi-plasma and a meltabomb is good enough, if the seekers are in melee something has gone desperately wrong. AA on sergeants - wound-tanking with squadleaders is a truly unsportsmanly modus operandi, very effective, but really flies in the face of the spirit of the HH game. If you are going to a tournament and want to win, by all means - if you are playing friendly games with ppl you know, leave the 2+ at home. If you have Alpharius the preator is just an expensive beatstick that have to ride along with the laerneans (who doesn't need the help) and push your spartan package up to 940pts - 1/3 of your army that will, if the enemy has some gravguns/cannons, or a super-heavy tank-hunter (or just a kraken-lightning) probably not move past turn 1 when that spartan will pop. Invest in consuls instead, a Legion force without (at least!) one Saboteur is thematicly lacking (also it is very good, and above all else. FUN! :P ). A thought - why coils of the hydra? this does not seem to be a list that will benefit much from reserve manipulation, nor have it taken advantage of the Rewards of treason. Wouldn't it be better run Primarch's Chosen and upgrade the tacticals to veteran tacticals if you want to run Alpharius? Or go Recon Company and run them as recon squads, remember your infantry can infiltrate in their dedicated transports - though that will bar you from bringing the terminators along. Unknown Legionnaire
Went back to the drawing board and made the following changes. ... Second incarnation of the list looks much better there. Some thoughts: - I'd keep the Praetor, he's a good diversion / melee support. If you really need to save pts. you can always run him as a cheap Centurion w. a Power Sword. Alternatively, ditch him, get a bare bones Centurion w. nothing but a Combi-Weapon to ride with your Seekers, and bring a Primus Medicae in Cataphractii Armour to hang out with your Lernaeans. Neither way will solve the 'all eggs in one basket' issue, but I feel that at 3k pts. that is quite okay. - Yep, Vexillas on your Tac Squads pretty please. - I have to disagree with STC Logisengine about the Artificer Armour here. I'd rather have three to four AA sergeants on the table as opposed to certain 'death star' units. But that's a matter of taste entirely, and a conclusion that heavily depends on one's gaming environment. - Drop the Omega for either a cheaper tank, or to fit in a 'Rewards of Treason' unit. - Go all Combi Plasma on the Seekers. Ditch the Plasma Pistol on the Sergeant. - To be honest, I'd stick with CotH for now. Yeah, I implied myself (in my above post) that Alpha Legion excels at selecting something generic and then spicing it up a notch (or two), but I think by now you have understood the implication of this RoW. Recon Company, PotL, Chosen Duty and even Armoured Spearhead all work miraculously awesome with your Legion synergies. Primarch's Chosen now, I feel like this particularly isn't a very gentleman RoW at all ... what belongs in the LoW slot should stay in the LoW slot. Decade
Thank you all again. I'll continue to play around with the list. The main reason I out the Omega in my list is because I am told I lack anti armor in most of the lists I've tried making so I threw him in for a little more. Decade
I am also a bit limited with what other tanks I have. Besides the one Spartan, I have one of each of the sicaran variants. Then 1 Leviathan (with gun arm magnetized), 3 dreads with one have 1 kheres and fist, one with plasma cannon, fist, havoc launcher, the last has dual fists. I also have three jet-bikes with all weapon options to choose from.
