General Strike
I want to paint some models up as sandstone statues. What would be a good paint technique to get wind worn sandstone statues? Exilyth
There's a tutorial for painting 'living statue armies' over on https://citadelcolour.com under 'special concepts'. Sandstone would require a color palette going a bit more into the yellow/ocre, maybe even orange/brown hues. You could also add cracks and other weathering damage using e.g. a knife before painting. Also fine sand on the top of surfaces near the bottom of the statue (to simulate matter which has fallen down due to erosion). edit: Just found a nice tutorial using agrax earthshade & stipling with a brush to make the stone texture: (but that technique is probably more usefull for terrain) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/358810-advice-on-painting-a-sandstone-army/#findComment-5398635 Share on other sites
Gederas
On Kurze's base that I painted, I used Skeleton Horde contrast (two thin coats) over primer that was pre-shaded (black base > grey > white at the top) then a drybrush of Karak Stone and Ushabti Bone as the edge highlight. It resulted in a pretty decent sandstone colour. Maybe that helps? General Strike
That helps a lot, Gederas. I am looking at painting some Thousand Sons as statues, and your sandstone is the perfect color. Luckily my Rubrics are already based black, so I can hit them from the top with grey then a spot of white and then run them with contrast. I need to pick up some Karak Stone.
