Nearly done with Dreygur over here:

uKVzsUR.jpg

Need to do his base before I can finish painting him though, as he's currently spinning around on too short of a pin (only the right length for that base) on the cork I'm using to hold him

Gederas, the carousel effect is something I just had to deal with for a certain hanger-on for my vow. Hate when they don't properly stick and just keep twirling... have a metal model on the bench right now and it's miserable.

Alright, The Sickly Ven is done, I'm done with it, there shall be no more! My vow for December is officially complete and I'm not entirely certain if I have time for the two and a half squads I have ready to start... hmmph. At the townhouse flat staying with relatives for a bit and didn't have my usual photo set up.

Oh, and got a hanger-on that I did as a Christmas gift for a friend.

Both looking great!

I am so looking forward to painting my Sigismund.

My templar brethren are missing powerplants and then maybe I can even put some primer on them before I drive home for christmas though its a busy week sadly.

I am very glad I didnt vow the templars for this month though. I dont think they will turn yellow this year.

-laughs- I didn't Lamebeard, but I had painted up a few for a mate a while ago.  When I got the venator I ended up taking with him and said, "yeah, Venators do feel a little specialised." and decided I'd trade it in for a couple of standard Sicarans and a third laser destroyer.

Felt a little more chunky and Sons of Horus'y to me. :P

Though I may end up painting up a few metallic Emperors Children for an Istvaan campaign force soon enough.

droppods-1.jpg

there is some cleanup needed in some areas, but at least i got them 'painted' before the end of the year. so expect some nicer surfaces (and nicer pictures) plus transfers next year.

For the purposes of the challenge, I declare Narik Dreygur done!

Narik looks good, Gederas! I have him in a box somewhere... you may have inspired me to finally drag him out and put some paint to him.

Those look like some well used old workhorses to me. Don't make them too pretty. ;)

And unlike my brother, okonomiyakimarine who knocked out six of the accursed drop pods, i apparently have no self-discipline and managed to not complete my vow. Hard to complete when I never actually started it. Ah well, it's the pain glove for me then. My legion suffers because the Medusa won't be delivered on time. Looks like I know what my January vow will be.

Alright guys I got a question:

I want to do the Energy effects on my swords and axes in a moree subdued way for my heresy Army. Meaning I'll do metal weapons and Just do a bit of lightning on them. I feel that fits better with the general feeling I want/get from heresy models.

Now in the praetor I kitbashed, the Paragon Blade is very literally front and Center of the model. Here I am wondering wether I should do a full workup of the blade as an energy blade, meaning it becoming a purple Blade, not a metal one

@Semper Fortis:

That is too kind of you. Really struggled with them, my time management, my nerves when sharing the painting table with my almost-3-year-old... maybe I have to paint something else in the meantime. Two units for the L&T or something else entirely and then go back, fix them and do decals.

  • 2 weeks later...

So I have done something - I got the base coats and shades on.

The head is similarly progressed. So highlights and maybe weathering to do, plus finding some way to attach the combi-melta. It needs a extra little wedge because he's got a little power armour hand and the forearm armour is getting in the way. By the time I found a bits seller still selling the correct left hand it was too late, the compromise already taken forward.

I'm happier with the red than on my veterans. This time I shaded all over the red with Agrax Earthshade, whereas on the veterans I just did rivets and cracks (I was worried about tide-marks). But the shade all over has made it less matte and no tide marks. Just need to hope the highlights brighten it up a bit. I've party been slowed down because this gentleman has taken up my hobby time:

med_gallery_93054_15563_457922.jpg

I wanted to do an "obviously" pre-heresy Dark Angel. I was party inspired by the art, so tried to get some heraldry. And I wanted to make sure there was no green, so as not to risk any 'christmas tree' effect. I see him as a Terran, a veteran since the beginning of the crusade, a warrior who has lasted longer than his original armour, and been gifted with a new set of mark iv. I'm still in two minds about him. I think the tone of the base is too similar to the model, but I was inspired by the fluff where they are defending the ship from Kurze's attack (and it also matches the Blood Angels I've made).

med_gallery_93054_15563_154898.jpg

I wanted a red Legion symbol. I was feeling so smug when I bought off ebay one of the old Epic decal sets from the early nineties, with common symbols in random colours - like you'll find Space Wolf icons in blue and Blood Angels in green. The problem was it was just not opaque enough to go over black. So I had to paint over the decal - such a pain.

med_gallery_93054_15563_255535.jpg

The other pad was just as bad. I had to paint a red stripe, use some black/transparent checks across it, then put the white number on the top. The white was too bright, so had to be nuln -oiled. This made the red too dull, so had to try painting over that also! By this stage I've gone crazy. I tried so hard to keep the model smooth. I used the wash over gloss varnish effect, partly to help with those decals. But I think dust stuck to the varnish whilst drying. And I tried to keep my paints thin but these photos make it look like I did half the model with a pallet knife. And he's still not finished, I need to decide on a weapon!

@LameBeard: i like the work you put into the symbols, all the leather and parchment details. In comparison the metal on pauldrons and power armour could get some extra shading and highlights. In my opinion the brass on the backpack looks really good, it is a warm tone like the red and it is close to the leather hues. What stands out as a negative for me is the base. I feel terrible to bring that up as many of my painted minis stand on bare plastic, but the lack of differentiation here brings down – relatively – the whole mini. I'd give the recesses a very dark wash and consider to paint in color variation like in games workshop's sector mechanicus bases that combine those silver and brass colors with white painted flat surfaces.

Thanks. I’m definitely going to try to improve the metal on the pauldrons now you’ve pointed that out - I chose those pauldrons deliberately to get a more ‘ornate’ feel for a veteran, so I need to make the best of them. As for the base, maybe it could be painted a different colour. Or have a hazard stripe - too much of a cliché? I had to pin him on the base, but might dare rebase completely to a dirt base.

A question for my fraters:

I did most of my weathering by sponging on vgc Terrakotta, because I liked the effect on my templars. See here:

bHFgDKL.jpg

Now this guy has been done and dusted for a bit. But I think you can See the weathering okayish on the picture.I also Do sponge on some vallejo Metal color for some more heavy chiping. After doing the same workup on a bunch of infantry I am wondering: should I maybe take a more dark brown with less Red in it? I already use a pretty reddish yellow and I feel like the paint chipping might get lost on it.

Also my landraider has some paint damage to it because I was impatient and careless when handling IT, so I think I will sponge a bit of Typhus corrosion and fresh rust onto IT. Just to get some more stark colours on those large panels
